Reflux and spit up

Hi ladies! I haven't posted here much, my son was born Oct 23rd. Guess i should introduce myself. I have a DD who is 2 and a half. She is a great big sis. My son is a crier, though he is getting better, he's much more moody than my daughter was at his age and mommy is having a tough time adjusting to two kids.

So heres my question: He has been on reflux meds for about 4 weeks. He is better, no more screaming after he spits up, but he still spits up like crazy. I change his clothes 3 times a day, my shirts are stained. He isn't bothered by it but its really annoying as far as laundry goes!

Anyway, do reflux meds reduce spit up? I am thinking NO but just want to hear your experience.

Also, I heard rice cereal reduces spit up. Thoughts? I think he's way too young but I will call his pedi on Monday to see what they think.

Thx ladies!

Re: Reflux and spit up

  • Welcome! My baby doesn't have reflux, but one of my older twins had it as a baby. Unfortunately, no the meds do not help with spitting up, just make them more comfortable. In fact sometimes the meds even make the spitting up slightly worse. My daughter was a huge spitter and used to soak me, the couch, herself, the floor or anything else around and I remember how frustrating it was. It did get better once she was sitting up on her own and was almost completely gone by 8 months. I'm sorry that you are dealing with reflux, but it's good to reach out here as everyone will have some good tips. Also, I can totally understand trying to adjust to being a mom of two, as I'm also struggling with having a new baby and 2, 3.5 year olds, so I can sympathize. Hang in there, we will all be okay! :)

  • Hello! I have never posted on here either but have been following since I knew I was pregnant...my daughter also has reflux and we are actually still trying to find the right meds for her...her dose increased today from 1/4 tab prevacid 2x a day to 3x a day....so far I have seen her spit up not decrease at all

her crying mid bottle has not stopped and she still seems to be in pain when eaing...she was on zantac for 2 weeks before this and has been on prevacid for 1 week...has anyone else had a similar situation of it taking a while to kick in? starting to get tired of seeing her in pain everytime she eats...

  • Thanks ladies!  I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone.

ltomford - my took a few weeks to show improvement.  He still cries, but no longer when he spits up.  In fact, he smiles when he's spitting up - it's pretty funny.  But he still cries when he's going to sleep or wakes up before he is ready.  And cries and cries and cries....  ugh.  Also, are you giving breastmilk in a bottle or formula?  I don't know much about formula, but maybe there is another kind that would be easier on her stomach?  A friend had to give alimenum (SP?) formula for her son who had really bad reflux.

OMG this is me!  I hate wearing any nice clothes because they get spit up on all the time.  And I am changing DS's clothes all the time!  Glad to hear it will get better soon - and kudos to you for raising a newborn when you have twins!  YIKES!  You are a champ!

  • I think the goal of meds is to get rid of any tummy pain associated with reflux but it will not necessarily reduce the spit up.  So if we're not crying/painful that may be as good as you get.  Which is good
