Tree Nut Allergy

Looks like my 23 month old has a tree nut allergy.  She doesn't have a problem with peanuts, but the tree nuts caused her to have the worst reaction the past few days after eating some Christmas cookies.

Any info on dealing with tree nut allergies would be great.  I am clueless about it.

 Thanks!

I don't have a kid with nut allergies but I'm a teacher with a classroom full of food allergies.  If you haven't already you should make an appointment with your pedi asap for an epi pen rx if appropriate.  The food allergy board is great.  IT's all about reading labels and knowing what to avoid and knowing that cross contamination is a real concern.  Good luck.

My twin girls have a suspected tree nut allergy. M had a rash to English walnut and Brazil nuts. N had a rash to almonds and pecans. This was done when we had allergy testing for dust and mold. Since it's possible for a person to be allergic to one type of tree nut and not another, it's a general rule to stay away from all of them.

There are great Smartphone apps. One is called Allergy Info. Also, there are companies that make stickers, bracelets, etc. about tree nut allergies.

We read the backs of all pre-made muffins, etc. to make sure there are no tree nut products or the possibility of cross-contamination. We are wary of homemade baked goods, too.

Your pediatric allergist should also have a wealth of information.

    Good luck, Momma!!

Awwww.  DS has a tree nut allergy (almonds) and a mild allergic reaction to peanuts.  His almond allergy gets a worse reaction than the peanut. A good allergist is the best place to start.

When I first got the news, I felt my world was falling apart.  But after living with it for a while, its really NBD.  Of course, we are lucky, his reactions are just a big rash or some hives...no anaphylactic reactions.  We are hopeful he will outgrow it, but not expecting it, since we were given a 20% chance of that happening...so if it does happen..its a gift.

I do carry an epi, but will hopefully won't ever have to use it.  We just keep the benadryl handy just in case.

The allergy/asthma specialist is one of the best things you can have for monitoring and attending to any problems.  They're also more accurate with the info on how to handle different situations.  The one I have is fantastic about when to worry and when to keep a laid back approach to everything and if ever I have an asthma flare, all I need to do to get an Rx is call, no second guessing my symptoms or make an office appointment (as long as I'm up to date), treat/fix the problem and if it's not gone by X then come in...
