Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Can't keep 2 year old in bed

We converted DS's crib to a toddler bed on Xmas Eve. He was constantly crawling out and I didn't want to take the chance of him falling. The first couple nights were great. Now he has pretty much stopped napping and when I put him in at night he keeps getting out. I put him back and eventually he stays in his room. When I go to check on him, I have to be careful opening the door because he falls asleep on the floor right behind the door.

The last two nights he has been getting up in the middle of the night. First night he woke up at 4 am and DH got up for the day with him. Last night he got up at 2. Finally after putting him back down several times I brought him in bed with me and eventually we fell back asleep for about 1.5 hours.

please tell me it gets better. I'm almost 10 weeks pregnant and need my sleep.

  • We had the same problem with our son. He was constantly getting out of his toddler bed. I was trying to be patient and just doing the super nanny method but ultimately we ended up putting a child proof lock on his door knob. I anticipated lots of fussing and screaming but it wasn't horrible. He now stays the whole night in his bed and at nap time. I would recommend that route but I know some people aren't comfortable with it.

  • We do have childproof door handles on the outside of the doors. I may have to put one on the inside too.

  • We also had to put the childproof locks on the inside during naps and night-time.  We would always check on him after things quieted down and often find him on the floor behind the door.  It eventually gets better.

  • We just transitioned the day after Christmas and my son is getting out of bed too, although he's a bit younger than yours. Yesterday he napped on the floor.  I put some cushy blankets near the door so he could nap there if he wanted.  In the middle of the night he's been up at least once each night.  Last night was the first night (night 3)  that he found his way back and went back to bed. He was in the bed when he woke this morning and he's currently napping in there right now.

When he cried or gets out of bed, I just leave him.  It sucks and it's hard, but it's how he learns.  I think for some kids you can go back in and put them in bed. For us that wasn't working and was making things worse.  I will either be reversing the doorknob (lock out) or putting a cover over the knob once he's able to work the knob.

The first two nights I panicked when he cried and brought him to bed too, but that was really teaching something that I wasn't willing to commit to. No one sleeps when we cosleep.
