Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

help me clean my house!

DH, DD and I are all getting over having some kind of cold or flu this past week.  DH's sister, BIL and our niece, who have been staying with us as, have also been sick.  They're leaving today, we're all feeling better and now I need to disinfect my house.  Is there anything in particular I should use to clean the soft surfaces like beds, pillows and couches?  How do I clean all of DD's toys that have been slobbered on by 2 toddlers?

  • Toys: I know bleach isn't eco-friendly, but that's the only thing I know to use. We used it when I worked in the nursery at church - there are instructions on the back for soaking toys to disinfect, and also for spraying on things to disinfect. Just make sure to rinse things really well if you use bleach.

I don't know about sofas and stuff - I've never had to deal with that.

  • Yes definitly bleach for the toys and you should probably wash all bedding you can get the arisol cans of lysol and spray it over your couch, good luck!
  • I use Lysol multi purpose cleaner when I ever buy some used toys. I make sure its nice and clean before I give it to my son to play with.
  • We had the exact same situation right before Christmas. I was sick, DH was sick, DD was sick, and we had company (MIL, SIL, and both BILs). When they left we were still sick and by the time we got better our house was a WRECK! We didn't even cook a Christmas meal because it was just ridiculous.

Once DD is asleep, bathe everything that can be submerged in a bleach water solution. If you are looking for something more eco friendly you can try vinegar. The vinegar smell will be gone when it dries. (we fill up the bathtub and put on rubber gloves and dunk all her toys in it, rinse, then let air dry. By the time she wakes up they are dry and ready to play with) For all DD's toys that can't be submerged (stuff with batteries etc)  we use antibacterial Lysol wipes. If we think she'll chew them then we rinse the Lysol off with a damp paper towel.

For soft surfaces that can't be put in the washing machine we use a combo of Antimicrobial Febreeze spray and Lysol disinfectant spray. Then we open windows and doors and let the breeze air out the house. It might not actually DO much as far as getting rid of germs but it FEELS cleaner for some reason to have all that nice fresh air circulating.
