I've been a lurker on this board with a few posts here and there and now I need some insight.
I am on day 40 of my cycle with no signs of my period coming any time soon. Took two pregnancy tests and both turned out negative. Taking the advice of the people on this board, I went to schedule an appointment with my doctor for day 60 (some of you may be thinking why plan it so early, but my doctor is normally booked up and I was worried I wouldn't get an appointment unless I booked early and if AF came, I could always cancel). When setting up the appointment the nurse asked what the appointment was for and when I told her she put me on hold and put my doctor on the phone who told me he would rather see me sooner and scheduled the appointment for next Thursday.
My question ISN'T am I pregnant. As far as I know, the answer is no and no one on a message board can give me that answer. The question is what should I expect from this appointment. Are they going to order a blood test to double check? Possibly give me prenatal vitamins? We weren't planning on actually TTC until April but we weren't TTA either. We are just having fun and what will be, will be.

Depending on when you last went in, they may also do an internal exam and a pap smear.
They could also do some blood work to check for thyroid issues and the like.
OP already said she'd on CD 40.
Cycle normally lasts 32 days, sometimes less. I am just going to wait and see what the doctor wants me to do. My doctor was being very persistent on the phone in wanting to see me sooner than 60 days. I just didn't know what to expect. After doing some research on Provera, I am don't think I would be comfortable taking it until I am 100% sure I am not pregnant (like I said in my OP, I REALLY don't think I am since my HPT came back with a BFN but I don't want to take any risks). If my doctor doesn't order a blood test, I will wait until day 60 and see what's going on.

girl, I've totally been in the same situation. I also am a usual 32d cycle. Approximately every 6mo (this took me 2 years off BC to figure out) I have a reeeeeaaally long "omg am i pregers?" cycle. Before discovering this pattern I had the longest cycle ever which was 48 days last Oct 2011. Just like you, we were not TTC and also not TTA. On day 40 I started bugging out....i think i peed on $100 worth of HPTs in 48 hours lol. ALL WERE BIG FAT NEG. I had a similar experience when I called my GYN office. She got me in right away. Basically she just did every thing that she would do for an annual visit, but we had A LOT MORE talk time than the usual wham bam thanks for the PAP smear Ma'am. She ordered an ultra sound which I was able to have done in the same day. She also ordered blood work to test hormones (a kind of kill many birds with one stone thing). She wanted to be able to get a good check of where I was at with all my hormones ESPECIALLY if I was not KU.
In the end we ended up finding that I had a cyst on one of my ovaries....the cyst had burst and left fluid causing pressure. The pressure on my uterus basically "confused" my system and disrupted my hormones. We decided to wait it out to see if my hormones would level out and send AF knocking on my door. Sure enough 4 Days after my appointment AF showed her face.
Just always keep in mind that when it comes to these types of visits with any doctor...YOU ARE IN THE DRIVER'S seat. Yes, they are the vajay and baby factory experts, but if you would like blood work or an ultra sound done and they have not ordered it...use that pretty little voice and pipe up! As long as insurance isn't going to send you a big fat DENIED coverage letter, its better to have piece of mind. Healthy mind is healthy body is healthy baby making.
Good luck at your appointment. Hope you get some answers...OBVI let us know if there is a surprise in there
if you have negative tests, there is no reason to bully your doctor into giving you an ultrasound. Having insurance coverage for a procedure doesn't mean you are entitled to one whenever you wish.
uuuuummm....an ultra sound isn't JUST to see if you are pregnant. In fact, heres a little FYI: thank GOD my sister-in-law requested an ultra sound after an odd period cycle. Though she had "normal" blood work (not pregnant, normal hormone levels", she wanted piece of mind. After having the ultra sound SHE REQUESTED (not bullied.....its a right to you as a patient to ask and request opportunities for options in testing) they found an abnormal lining of her uterus....her OBGYN then did an additional PAP and internal ultrasound where they found abnormal cells (aka pre-cancer).
Don't post hostile, non-encouraging, judgmental, remarks. I work in the medical community. If a medical provider ever THOUGHT a patient was bullying them by requesting further reassurance through safe noninvasive testing..... they would be doing their patient an injustice by not being receptive to the idea.
