After I had DD1 I requested a schedule change and was given permission to work from home one day a week. Now that DD2 is here I would like to ask to for another change. I am thinking a shorter work day might be more beneficial. I had mentioned it to my boss and she is open to the idea she said to put a couple of ideas in writing and she would review with HR. I feel like I should put some benefits to the company in my proposal, but I am sort of struggling with how this would actually benefit the company other than me being happier-haha. If I reduced my hrs, I would take a pay reduction, but I wouldn't be loosing that many hours, so the reduction wouldn't really be that significant to the company.
I am also, selfishly, a little worried about giving up my day at home. I don't have to get up as early because no commute and I don't have to get dressed if I don't want to, I sometimes do laundry at home. My reasons for wanting a shorter workday is so that I can pick DD1 up from preschool when her school day ends and not have to put her in aftercare and to give me more time with the kids in the evening. I have a 40 min commute and will have to make two stops to pick the kids up and then get dinner on the table (the plan right now is for DH to do drop off and me to do pick up), so I think those benefits are much better for our family. Has anyone asked for a schedule change? Any tips or ideas you have to share?
Re: Working Moms-Anyone ask for a schedule change?
I start my new job Monday and asked to work 7:30-4:30. They agreed to that but not 7-4.
7:30-4:30 is probably better anyway though with all there is to do in the morning! I plan on scoping out the office environment first though to make sure I don't come across as getting favoritism before I prove myself. I am definitely leaving by 5 every day though.
I have hope of starting at a new co but until then decided to change my work schedule so it is more predictable when I leave (as much as can be) and plan to work 4 days a week 730a- 3p or 330p. Naturally when I have my 6a meetings I will be home even earlier.
A salary reduction no matter how small is a benefit to a co in these times. Don't over think, provide 3 benefits if you must but in your case it does not sound like you need to because your boss understands already. Good luck
