weaning

I need help. My son is 14 months and has been breast fed from the start. Now I need to take an antidepressant. He's already drinking whole milk. He has no problem with it. But, he still insists on nursing. It seems like the more I try to distract him he wants to nurse more. He won't go to sleep at night without nursing. All night long he wakes up wanting to nurse and won't go back to sleep until he's nursed! I'm about to lose my mind

Re: weaning

  • Honestly it's going to be hard. There will be battles, frustration and lots of tears on both parts but it's short lived. Read Dr. Jay Gordon's night weaning. I don't think it has to only pertain to Co sleepers. When he asks for the boob in the day give him a bottle/sippy with milk. Do something else. If you work, he should be used to you being gone, if not, get someone to watch him while you go out for awhile.
It took me a good week to completely night wean and a couple of weeks for her to stop asking but I didn't give in. She doesn't ask for it anymore but instead asks for cuddles. Those few rough nights we're worth it. GL!

  • Is nursing something you absolutely CAN'T do on antidepressants, or is not maybe not a good idea?  I really don't know.

I ask because weaning hormones are a beast, and it would be good if you could wait until the medication has started working.

  • The antidepressants have never been tested on nursing mothers. So the possibility of it getting in breast milk could be harmful to my son. My doctor strongly recommended weaning before I even start the medication
  • Do you want to wean? Could you ask about a different medication? There are some that are ok to take while nursing if you personally aren't ready to wean
  • No advice about the weaning, but if you want to keep nursing talk to your doc because there are lots of meds you can take while breastfeeding.
