How to tell work I'm not going back?

So I was about 90% sure I wouldn't be going back to work, but that 10% kept me from telling work. As my maternity leave would be coming to an end I am certain I will be staying home. I work for a very large company and policy is for me to inform HR. I am torn on whether or not I should reach out to my manager directly as well and if so how I should do it. The office is across town and roads are icy, so just stopping by isn't very reasonable. I'm worried an email will be too much like a Dear John letter.

She was my manager for about 6 weeks before I left, but we worked in the same department the full 2 1/2 years I worked there. We didn't interact much before she became the manager, but she did come to my baby shower. I am sure it will be disappointing news and I'm not sure how to give it.

Any suggestions?  Has anyone else had to tell work they aren't coming back?

Re: How to tell work I'm not going back?

  • I cleaned out my desk several weeks ago on the pretense of needing some of the stuff. At that point I knew I wasn't going back but wasn't ready to let them know.

When I wentto formally resign, as usual, my boss wasn't in the office. So I emailed her an attachment with my formal resignation letter.

I tried to do it in person, but as she is never there, it was difficult. I expect she will call me on 1/2 when she returns. Joy.

  • I would in person if possible. It shows respect even if she was your manager for a short time. Never know you may cross paths again someday if you reenter the workforce.
