Hi everyone,
Im a lurker on this board but since my daughter is a fellow April baby I thought I should ask. Does anyone else's baby not really talk yet? She says some words but understands everything I tell her. She is a only child, I have been told that if they are an only child their speach development is slower because they arent being forced to speak. She was an early walker at 8 months, and early crawler. I went to the doctor with her a bit ago and they said it was normal. Should I get a secound opinion or just let her develop on her own?
Thanks Ladies!
Re: Advice please
DS was walking at 9.5 months and crawled early as well. i'd say he isn't talking yet - he has quite a few little words but for the most part i'm the only one who would know what he means...i'd say he has maybe 10 words (ball, mamma, dadda, pappa, all done, etc - however he doesn't say them clearly like they're spelled!)
i'm not concerned about it at all yet - he totally understands what i mean when i ask him to do things so i just go with it.
As long as her comprehension is good she is probably just a late talker. That list of words you gave is pretty good for this age so I wouldn't worry yet.
My son has a language disorder and is in speech therapy as well as occupational therapy and sees an early interventionist. His comprehension is very low and he only knows 2 words. He doesn't even understand the concept of yes and no yet.
My April baby is #2 and I'd consider her a late talker. Her older brother didn't say much until like 23 months, but understood everything...her father didn't talk until three...and dd understands almost everything, but her she only has a few words, but pretends to talk all the time. She "babbles" exactly as many syllables as an appropriate answer would be and uses the same intonation-it's hysterical. If, at her two year appointment we haven't seen much improvement, I'll start to concerned.
