Incense

My boss meditates in his office daily.  While doing so, he burns incense.  I know that cigarette and cigar smoke should be avoided during pregnancy - but what about incense?

Re: Incense

  • I think its fine, I got into candles when i dont feel well. i love it.

Reading fail: i totally read your title as incest... i need to lay off the SVU.

  • I'm pretty sure its fine. If it bothers you (the scent) you can open a window?

Some essential oils are to be avoided because they can relax the uterine muscles, as well as Frankincense.

    From livestrong:

    Safety During Pregnancy

Conclusions about the safety of frankincense during pregnancy are conflicting. Frankincense has sometimes been classified as an abortifacient or emmenagogue -- a stimulator of absent menstrual flow and thus possibly at times an early abortifacient. Until further research is conducted, herbalist Denise Tiran recommends that potential emmenagogues, including frankincense, be generally avoided during pregnancy, at least during the first trimester. Aromatherapist Maria Lis-Balchin considers it safe for pregnant women to inhale frankincense, but advises caution in massage with the essential oil, which in the laboratory it is known to relax uterine muscle. According to Simon Mills and Kerry Bone's herbal safety manual, frankincense has received an Australian government pregnancy category B1 classification. In other words, according to limited human and animal studies, there is no evidence to date that frankincense causes fetal harm. If you are pregnant, ask your doctor whether and which form of frankincense is safe for you and your baby."

Does he burn Nag Champa? I don't know what's in it, but I would crack a window and get a little mini fan to blow towards the window if you are concerned. Its smokey so that might bother your nose/lungs/airway.

The smell would put me off because I'm have aversions to strong smells right now. If it were me I'd open a window and get air circulating.

  • You don't want to inhale cigarette smoke because of the carcinogens and such that's in them.  Incense is completely different.  We burn incense in our house all the time.  I prefer it to the open flame of a candle or melted wax that can spill.
