Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Baby hated bottles now seems to want one! :/

So after just shy of a year of EB a baby who refused bottles from the start, LO is now weaned as of about 3 weeks ago. It was surprisingly easy since we were only down to the morning nursing so it seemed she didn't even notice. A couple of days ago she got a new sippy cup that she immediately started using like a bottle. She wanted it to suck on to go to sleep so I replaced it with a different cup but she is still doing it. It is whole milk inside but I am still worried about her teeth at night before bed.. Is this ridiculous to worry about? Has anyone else had a infant/toddler who used a sippy cup like a bottle or soothing method? I guess it is just strange to me...

  • My LO was bottlefed exclusively after 3 months, so my situation was slightly different, but we did wean at exactly 12 mos (she had her very last bottle the night she turned one) and even now at almost 14 mos when she's exceptionally tired or not feeling well she will use her sippy like a bottle.  I personally see no need to discourage it.  For one we have a million kinds of sippy cups and she'll do it with any of them and for two it's not really harming anything and she doesn't do it every time she has a sippy.  My advice is no sippy in the crib brush her teeth after you take the sippy for the night right before she goes down and you'll be fine.

  • The main issue is going to sleep sucking on a milk filled cup or bottle.  That will rot her teeth.  We don't give DS anything in bed after he gets his teeth brushed.  Occassionally, he'll wake up thirsty, so I'll give him a sippy of water, that is okay on his teeth.  But milk has a ton of sugar.
