GTKY occupation

1. What do you do for a living? I am a teacher of the deaf. I work with children with hearing aids or cochlear implants.

2. What do you hate about your job? The first thing people ask when they find out what they do is if I sign. When I say no, many people  ask if I teach my kids Braille. For the record, just like people with glasses don't always use Braille, people with hearing loss don't always sign. While I'm not against signing, my school only works with students who are 100% oral.

3. What do you love about your job?  I love working with parents of newly identified children. I love being able to give them hope about their child's future. I also love working with adolescents. That's the time where they start grieving over their disability and I really like helping them get through that.

Re: GTKY occupation

  • 1. Right now I am working part time as a bank teller. I am in school for Office Administration also.

    2. I hate the pressure of having to sale products to customers. Not everyone needs a new account every time they walk in the door of the bank!

    3. I love our customers and also my coworkers. We all get along so well that I actually enjoy going into work.

  • 1. I do client relationship management for an investment bank. I've been doing it for 4 years although I've been in the financial industry for about 14. I worked on a trading floor prior to this role.

    2. I hate the stress and the long hours, 7am to about 6pm.

    3. I love being able to work from other offices when I travel, including London and Singapore. I love the fast pace and meeting different people.

    Edited for typos.

  • 1. I am a high school English teacher.

    2. I despise the grading. Our class sizes are huge so I average 130-150 students every year. We have multiple essays each semester plus all of the daily work I have to assess. Needless to say, I have no life. I am dreading going back because all I want to do is spend time with my LO and my weekends are always consumed by grading. Ugh.

    3. I love the kids. Sure, they can drive me crazy and at times I have a bad class or two that will really stress me out, but I love those moments of teaching that are so rewarding. I love seeing my kids progress and improve. They can also be pretty hilarious.

This sounds horrible!!! Thanks for doing it for the children's sake.

  • 1. I am a teacher. My most recent job was a year term position teaching in the elementary grades.

    2. Dealing with parents who either do not prioritize their child's education, their own child or swinging the other way, parents who carry their child through life. I had one mom who would do her son's homework! He really struggled in my class because he was so used to having his parents do everything for him to the point where he couldn't think for himself. It's difficult to watch. Oh and I dislike recess/lunch/bus/etc. duty...although, I have yet to meet a teacher who loves duty. haha OH and one more-the disrespect of some kids and even some classes, especially when subbing!

    3. I love seeing that light bulb go off when I child gets it. I love watching them get excited about learning and/or life in general. I love that while I'm the teacher, I still continue to learn so much about people, life and even the subjects I teach because of my students. :) It's a job I wouldn't ever give up. :)

Thanks! You can imagine how frustrated I get when I hear that teachers are overpaid and get summers off. My husband jokes that he only has a wife two months out of the year because I am so busy during the school year. It's worth it in the end though :)

  • 1. Registered nurse in cardiac critical care.

    2. People thinking that I'm playing on the computer when in reality I'm charting EVERYTHING that is going on; vital signs, assessment, any time I talk to a doc, any time a pt has a bowel movement...

    3. I love so many things...the autonomy in my role, the science behind what I do...but mostly I love when I have a super sick pt teetering on the edge of death...and then they get better and I see them walk out of the unit.

  • 1. I am in the Army, full time active duty. I work human resources, mostly do manpower management.

    2. I hate the long hours, sometimes it is 12-14 hour days, every now and again I do 24 hour shifts. And even though I deployed over a year ago and hopefully won't be going again anytime soon, I hate the idea that I will have to leave my little man. I have to go to school in South Carolina for a month in the spring, I will come home for a couple of weeks, and then go back again for another 6 weeks. So I know another year long deployment will kill me!

    3.  I absolutely love the idea of serving my country (both of my parents are retired). I also love the fact that I get to mold some of the younger Soldiers. I have 8 that work for me now and I enjoy watching them grow as Soldiers and future leaders. Also, I've been able to travel the world, the Army paid for my degree and will pay for my Masters.

  • 1. I'm a Business Process Analyst for a financial company

    2. At any moment I could get my severance package. It's been like that since 2010 so I am no longer as stressed as I was when it all started, but it still sucks to work knowing that's the future. Though post baby, I now wouldn't mind a year home with LO. :):):)

    3. Love my team, love my work, love that no day is ever the same and I'm not tied to my desk or a set schedule.

  • 1. my title is Director of Human Resources (aka Director of Chaos-lol!) at a health org

    2. Hate- Starting to dislike the 24/7 environment I work in after working in healthcare for last 8 years

    3. I love that every day is different yet the same at times, also love my 5 min commute.

    3. I get to work with so many cool things in our lab from beer to paint to oil, it's pretty cool.

  • 1. I'm a teacher. I teach 7th grade reading and language arts.
    2. I hate dealing with all the none teaching stuff homeroom, studies, duties and all the parents that forget that I have 100 students and can't spend two hours a day working with their child when the child doesn't seek out help during class.
    3. As difficult as teenagers can be, I love the relationships we build and the moment they get something or speak enthusiastically about something we are studying I know I have done my job.

  • 1. I'm an actuary.  (That means I do math and statistics for an insurance company, in case you didn't know!)

    2. I hate that some days you come in to work thinking it will be a normal day, and then you or someone else finds a problem with a product, a report, or a model, and then your day goes from normal to high-stress, work till you find the answer, just like that.

    3. I love problem solving and getting to use my "math nerdiness" every day. I also enjoy that it's a professional work environment so even though I'm not the boss I have a lot of input in how our team works, what it works on, and what I'm working on each day.

    1. I am a research scientist, and I manage a protein production facility.

    2. The long hours 10 on a good day and the time sensitivity; there are days that I have to work 16 hours and there's no option to go home without finishing because it would ruin weeks' worth of work.

    3. I work for a true genius and it's so exciting to be a part of his work. I also love the problem solving I do and that I have a pretty cushy job compared to many in my field.

    I want your job.

I'm an RN, currently I work ER and Trauma at a pretty large urban facility.

I hate that medicine has evolved into a business. I'm tired of catering to the bullsh!t no matter, no matter how people treat you because the goverment says we have to or you don't get paid. I wish faith was put back into the trained medical professionals instead of a pencil pushing insurance person or lawyer.
I love the science and anatomy aspect. I love caring for patients and their families who are truly in need.

  • 1. I'm a child and adolescent therapist.

    2. I start a new job next week so we will see. At my last job I worked inhome so I traveled a lot and since I work with kids all my sessions had to be after school gets out, that made for long days. The pay is sad considering that It requires a master's. In general I dislike the shortage of qualified providers and programs. It is so hard to know that a person needs X service but they have to wait weeks for the next opening with a good provider.

    3. I love the kids. Yes some make me want to pull my hair out but the kids I work with have been through so much during their lives and haven't lost hope that things will get better. They constantly amaze me.

  • 1. I'm a 6th grade Language Arts teacher.

    2. I hate how student progress relies on tests (state, benchmark, etc). I feel our schools only focus on testing now.

    3. I work with very poor children. My students have clothes and shoes with holes in them. Their home environment is awful. When they say they're hungry, they really really mean it. I wish I could take all of them home with me and provide for them. Being I can't do this, I love developing relationships with them and being there for them when they need me. Just hearing encouraging words means a ton to them.

  • 1. I am a registered nurse on a high risk obstetrics unit at the hospital that does the most deliveries in Ohio.

    2. I love my job, but handling high risk pregnancies can be very sad. When we have patients that have bad outcomes, it is extremely hard emotionally. I've cried with patients more times than I care to remember. Working there through my own pregnancies was also very difficult. I know way too much.

    3. Helping patients sustain a pregnancy and leave the hospital with a healthy baby...or two, or three, or four...is the.best.thing.ever! We develop friendships with patients because many of them can be inpatient for months. It is awesome when former patients send pictures, or bring their kids to visit us! I don't think I could ever have a job more rewarding than that!
  • 1. For the past few years I have only worked odd jobs here and there. Traveling and mission work has been my priority, so I would just find any job I could get to pay for my next trip. But for the past few years I have taken up photography any chance I can. I have done a number of shoots ranging from families to maternity to senior pictures. For the past year or so my husband and I have decided to join up and start a photography/videography business of our own. I was a film major and he was a double major in journalism and meteorology so we have the training for this type of venture. Eventually we would like to take this on our travels. We both have big hearts for orphans, specifically in Third World countries.

    2. I don't hate the road I have chosen, because I have had so many great experiences abroad. But I have hated working retail. It's so sucks, especially when you know you'll do more in the future.

    3. Photography and videography love it! Love the creative process of telling a story through both mediums, love editing pictures, love capturing people for who they are, etc.
