Sooo... L breaks a normal swaddle every night and his mattress is on an incline for reflux, eventually he works his way down and gets coccooned by the blanket over his head. He has broke the escape-proof swaddle once before and hates it if he wakes up and realizes he's in it. I can't put it on him unless he's fast asleep. However if he's put to sleep without a swaddle he will wake himself up with his hands or startle... basically i'm effed...

This! The miracle blanket worked like a charm for us. My LO has not been able to break out of it and he loves it. If you haven't tried it already I would definitely recommend it.
No advice on the swaddle... we use the Miracle Blanket and one of my girls can break out of it, but we are going to start working on no swaddle soon since they are starting to roll over.
A suggestion for the inclined mattress... roll up a blanket, then put it in the form of a U, then put it under the sheet. We do this and sometimes our babies will work their way down so their butt is on the bottom of the U, but they don't roll to the side or work their way all the way down the crib.
PAIF and SAIF welcome. IVF questions welcome, too.
Sounds like my DS - he hates his swaddle and fights with all his might when he wakes up and finds himself in it. He fights so hard that he rubs his hair off, and we can hear the velcro coming apart as well. He is only 7w but we are giving up... we have the Halo swaddle sleepsack that allows you to swaddle arms in or arms out. Last night we decided to leave his arms out. Surprisingly, he didn't startle himself much at all, and he is SO MUCH calmer. He can also soothe himself at times when his hands/fingers find his mouth. I think we will just leave his arms out at this point.
We haven't tried the miracle blanket, but just want to say that the HALO swaddle sleepsack worked for the first few days, but after that, DS has been able to get his arms out every night.

Our IVF miracle, Baby Boy M, arrived on 11/8/2012!
The wombie is one ot the best baby items I have. The first being the Rock and Play which allows him to sleep on an incline.
"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."
I'm in canada and I can't find the rock and play ANYWHERE... i had a friend who had one but she sold it before I was pregnant - as for a wombie I've never heard of it until today when I did a search for sleep sacks.
