WWYD - re: swaddle

Sooo... L breaks a normal swaddle every night and his mattress is on an incline for reflux, eventually he works his way down and gets coccooned by the blanket over his head. He has broke the escape-proof swaddle once before and hates it if he wakes up and realizes he's in it. I can't put it on him unless he's fast asleep. However if he's put to sleep without a swaddle he will wake himself up with his hands or startle... basically i'm effed...

Re: WWYD - re: swaddle

  • I do a double escape proof swaddle.  Otherwise, my son wakes himself up by hitting himself with his hands.  I take an Aden and Anais muslin blanket and swaddle him then wrap him in a thicker blanket.  It usually works pretty well.  Although now he is getting much bigger and much stronger and on occasion has broken the swaddle.

  • you don't get scared that you're overheating him?

  • Nope. The muslin blanket is paper thin and really doesn't do much to keep him warm which is why we also use the thicker blanket.  It's just that the muslin provides a more secure swaddle than the blanket does.

  • Have you tried a woombie? It looks and feels like you are putting them in a baby straight jacket. No breaking out of that one.
  • I've always thought the miracle blanket was the best swaddler. DD loved it. I miss those days.

This! The miracle blanket worked like a charm for us. My LO has not been able to break out of it and he loves it. If you haven't tried it already I would definitely recommend it.

  • thanks everyone... i'm trying the double swaddle tonight and if he breaks it I'm going to go no swaddle cold turkey since he's been fussing when he realizes he's swaddled anyways...

  • No advice on the swaddle... we use the Miracle Blanket and one of my girls can break out of it, but we are going to start working on no swaddle soon since they are starting to roll over.

A suggestion for the inclined mattress... roll up a blanket, then put it in the form of a U, then put it under the sheet.   We do this and sometimes our babies will work their way down so their butt is on the bottom of the U, but they don't roll to the side or work their way all the way down the crib.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • Sounds like my DS - he hates his swaddle and fights with all his might when he wakes up and finds himself in it.  He fights so hard that he rubs his hair off, and we can hear the velcro coming apart as well.  He is only 7w but we are giving up... we have the Halo swaddle sleepsack that allows you to swaddle arms in or arms out.  Last night we decided to leave his arms out.  Surprisingly, he didn't startle himself much at all, and he is SO MUCH calmer.  He can also soothe himself at times when his hands/fingers find his mouth.  I think we will just leave his arms out at this point.

We haven't tried the miracle blanket, but just want to say that the HALO swaddle sleepsack worked for the first few days, but after that, DS has been able to get his arms out every night.

  • The wombie is one ot the best baby items I  have.  The first being the Rock and Play which allows him to sleep on an incline.

  • I'm in canada and I can't find the rock and play ANYWHERE... i had a friend who had one but she sold it before I was pregnant - as for a wombie I've never heard of it until today when I did a search for sleep sacks.
