My dd is almost 14 months, my mom thinks she should talk more. She says baby, ball, mama, and daddy. And tons of just baby talk. What words is urs saying? I know all babies are different but I just wonder if she's right?
Does she know any of her food items or toys? LO knows 100x more words that she actually says too. LO's grandma says her dad didn't talk until 2 yrs and then spoke in sentences.
LO was the same..until one day ( around 16 months old) he started saying so many new words within days, he said milk, duck, dunno ( i know, right?), minnie ( our cats name), truck etc etc..
My son is 19 months and he doesn't talk much either he say's Mamma , Daddy, bye, hello, hi , no , SpongeBob, kitty, bubba, off, ball , sissy and, hey. I wouldn't worry all babies are different she'll be talking up a storm before you know it .
Your babe talks way more than mine did. 16.5 months here and barely any words ... thankfully it's the same with the other 3 kids at daycare (similar ages) and DD started baby signs a few weeks ago, so we have some form of (limited) communication and I'm not worried. DD said "hi" for a few weeks (then stopped), says "hot" ("ha") all the time, says "mama" on occasion and just this week started "uh oh" ("ah ah") and "all done" ("uh ah") regularly.

DD is 20 months and still only has a few words. She will say some for about a month and then stop saying them ever. I've still never been called any form of "mama" and DH has only been "Daddy" a couple times. But she understands everything we tell her. She says "all done" "up" "please" "thank you" and then just about everything else is "ba". We know she'll get there eventually, but I know it's frustrating when all you want to do is communicate with your child.
She knows a couple other words but that's all she says with real consistency. I'm not worried. She understands 100xs more than she says and what she does say is crystal clear.
DD is 14 months as well and barely says anything. Sometimes I think...oooh, that sounded like _____ (mom, dad, <cat's name>, etc.), but there's really not been any consistent word she says. She does understand words though and responds "appropriately" (puts hands over head when we say "touchdown," gives a kissy face when we say "kisses," etc.).
Thanks I feel better, she does say hi and bye I forgot those. She definitly knows other words and responds to them. She loves books so I'll just keep reading;
My LO said practically nothing at 14 months and I even raised my concerns at the 15 month checkup. The doctor said not to stress; there's a wide variation at this age. Now my DD says more than 50 words at 20 months and it happened so fast.

Language learning is as much understanding as talking - and talking is harder. If she doesn't understand many words at all, I'd be concerned, but DD had even fewer verbal words at that age than yours. We were doing some signing (and she didn't sign until 12mo, but understood them), so it didn't really surprise me - any secondary language will delay their talking at first.
DD had an explosion of words right around 15-16 months. She went from just a handful of words to over 25 almost overnight. She now speaks in 2-4 word sentences. It will come. Don't worry!
She's right on track. They want to see at least 3 words at 15 months and 10 words at 18 months. If shes babbling lots, that means more words are coming.
At 21 months, my son has well over a hundred words. But at his 18 month appointment they were only looking for five. By then he was starting to string two words together, so he was well ahead. Your kiddo is fine with her words. Like pp said, it's understanding of words and her starts at saying words. Once she get's comfortable, she'll start saying more and more, then repeat all the swear words you still say occassionally because you haven't stopped the potty mouth completely Whoops!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!
Mommy all day everyday :0) Doggy (all animals are doggies) Baby(when he sees a baby or hears one) Hot (when we give him food) Daddy (a few times a week)
He signs: Water Milk More
He babbles all day long. I'm not worried even though some kids may say more. He does understand a lot and will follow directions really well like putting something in the garbage, handing an item to someone, giving us something he's not supposed to have like a crayon or the remote.
DS decided to focus on vocab instead of gross motor skills. At 24 months, he had over 250 words, but he didn't start walking until 21 months. Everything varies so much at this age, but it's very easy to get paranoid about it
Nina is almost 17 months old and says mamma, dadda, papa (for my dad), kitty, hi, oww, and she is starting to say our dogs name. She also meows. At her 15 month appointment Nina's pedi said they like to see 8 words by 18 months.
Every child develops at their own speed! My guy picked up a ton of words this month, and he'll be 15 months on Wednesday. He says:
Hi
More
Ball
Boom
Dog
Dada
Mama
Please
Moon
Milk
Arf Arf
Moo
Tweet
Ho ho ho
Meow
Row
And he makes his version of a pig noise
my daughter had no words at 14 months now she speaks nonstop. Every child is different and most kids don't start to really talk until around 18 months or so.
