Trouble TTC

26years old 3 rounds of clomid still not pregnant,,,,,,,,

Hi I'm very new to this, I need some advice and I don't want to worry my family so I'm asking you guys.

I'm 26 years old with PCOS and I'm having difficulty conceiving. My doctor put me on 3 rounds of clomid but I'm still not pregnant. Now she says I have to go to the specialist because she cant help anymore. :(

I can't afford a specialist, what do I do now?

Re: 26years old 3 rounds of clomid still not pregnant,,,,,,,,

  • Have you had an HSG to determine if your tubes are open? All the clomid in the world wont help if your tubes aren't open. I'm sorry you have to be here, but I think you'll find a ton of helpful people & information here.

  • I've had blood work done 10 years ago that's how I was diagnosed with PCOS.

I've been with my husband 7 Years and we do not use condoms but my periods are very irregular. It's been the past year that we are seriously trying to get pregnant.

My doctor only  prescribed the clomid to me I never went for a follow up, we just spoke on the phone every month.

I have no insurance what are my options to do further testing? Do you know how much it will costs? I'm willing to spend the $ to make sure everything is okay.

  • Clomid has a lifetime max of only 6 rounds. Its best to get the basic fertility testing done before you start a medication like that so you don't "waste" any of your clomid cycles when you may potentially have a blocked tube or low sperm count in your hubby. (you may have already done this).

Also you may be able to afford to see an RE or fertility specialist. I have my first appointment coming up on Monday and along with the initial evaluation, exams, and treatment plan, we will also be meeting with a financial adviser who will go over our payment options as well as our insurance policies. I don't think my insurance covers this type of treatment, but the first appointment isn't too bad and then we can make a plan to see what we can afford to do once we have all the info. We make have to save up some before we can get started, but at least we will know what we are up against. Hope this info helps. GL!!!

  • I'm sorry that you have to be here :(

Do you mean that you have no insurance coverage for fertility diagnosis/treatment, or no insurance period? If you mean that you don't have coverage, you might be surprised- sometimes they cover diagnosis but not treatment, etc. If you mean that you don't have insurance period, can you get on your husbands insurance?

I have no insurance what are my options to do further testing? Do you know how much it will costs? I'm willing to spend the $ to make sure everything is okay.

Do you mean no IF insurance coverage or no insurance at all? Because no IF coverage is common, I'm paying OOP for all IF treatments.  But no insurance at all would be hard having a baby let alone IF treatments too.  There are a few part time jobs that offer some form for insurance if you or your DH can take on a little extra work...tar.get offers insurance after the first 90 days.  I believe Star.bucks offers insurance after 60 or 90 days.  If you want to bring a baby into this world - insurance is important...and if you'll be paying for IF out of pocket (OOP) then the extra cash a side job brings in will be extremely helpful.

As for OOP costs.  To do a clomid cycle properly monitored with an IUI for insemination (what you most likely will need to do if the HSG is found all clear) is around $800-$1000 (depending on how many ultrasounds need to be done).  This includes the cd3 B/W and U/S that is part of a IF work up.  I believe the HSG is around $1200 - but maybe someone else can give more up to date figures since it's been so long since I had mine.  A S/A for your husband also needs to be done before further treatments...and that costs about $200.

SO - you need to plan on $2,500 -$3,000 to have a consult and all the testing and one round of IUI.  While a year trying seems like a long time...if you need to save for the next year to afford it - then this is what you need to do.  I've personally had to take two eight month breaks in between treatments to afford it (thus why I've been trying since July 2009).  But it's the responsible adult thing to do. Yes, it's hard but it's life.

If this is something you can't fathom affording right now start by just saving to pay for the S/A for your husband and finding a position where you can get a little heath insurance.  Save all the money you get from that extra job towards getting the HSG.  Once you pay for that (or the insurance kicks in so you can get it) then save for a treatment cycle.

    Good luck.

  • I'm sorry you have to be here! I would stop taking clomind until you have had the proper procedures done. You need to first do a HSG - to see if your tubes are blocked and have your husband do a SA. My OB/GYN was able to order these for me an it was covered through my insurance. There's no point in taking clomid if your tubes are blocked or have difficulties with his sperm.

Every RE is different, however, will prescribe Clomid with proper monitoring for up to 6 cycles. You could develop cysts and diminish your uterine lining (which will not allow you to sustain a pregnancy). Do not continue Clomid. I don't have PCOS, however, regarding insurance, you can either choose to save up money and start off with IUI before moving forward with IVF. Only a fertility clinic can tell you what your financial options are. GL

  • Ditto to the previous posters.  You may find that a fertility clinic will put you on a basic plan so that you are paying bare minimum for the procedures since you don't have insurance.  There are also payment plans with low percentage interest rates specifically for infertility.  My fertility clinic charges me 250 for bloodwork and ultrasound for my monitoring appts, 75 only for bloodwork, and around 200 for the actual insemination.  It's manageable if you budget for it.
