Solids mamas

How are you doing this? Because I think I'm doing it wrong...lol.

When, in the day, are you feeding LO solids? How many times a day?

Are you still feeding as much milk/formula as usual when it's time to feed a solid? Or do you decrease the bottle and make up for it with the solid?

At a solid feeding, how many ounces of milk or formula and how many of food is LO getting?

I do twice a day, once in the am and pm. I give him a 2.5oz bottle instead of the 4 he usually gets and about 1.5oz of food. Then this mag I have says from 4 to 8 months, they should just be getting two tablespoons three times a day. Whoops.

Re: Solids mamas

  • I haven't started yet but from what Gerber sent me. They said baby should be getting minimum of 2428 oz of formula or bm and about 2 tablespoons, which is roughly an oz, of solids per meal.
Its menu plan was regular early morning bottle, smaller bootle with 2 tablespoons of cereal if using I might add, regular bottle, smaller lunch bottle with 2 tablespoons of fruit, regular bottle, smaller dinner bottle with 2tbs veggies, and any motn bottles as necessary.
Thinking back to my daughter, that's about the way I had her scheduled. She still was chugging down about 30 some oz of formula a day which the pedi didn't like. So once 6 months, I intro water to help lessen the weight gain.

  • We do a fruit or veggie in the am and cereal in the pm. DS usually eats about a tablespoon of each mixed in with about a tablespoon of formula and then follows it up with about an oz of formula. He's a little guy so he gets full fast.

  • I so don't give formula at feedings. I feed them until they signal they are done and then I give them half and half juice. I do one feeding a day a couple hours after their afternoon bottle, right before bath time. Then they get a bottle a couple hours later before bed. My ped recommended once a day at 4 months, twice a day at 5 months and 3 times a day at 6 months and we will discuss things again at the next visit.

  • DS's pedi told us to offer no more than an oz of fruit, veggies, or cereal twice a day. And depending on how much he eats during those two feedings that I was to offer him an ounce or two of milk afterwards. He said as long as the baby is getting in between 18 to 28 oz [with eating solids] that thats a healthy amount.

We havent started yet but I plan on doing fruit in the morning and veggies in the evening.

    Edit: meant 28 not 25oz

  • I give a tablespoon or so of banana about half an hour after our morning nursing session, and about that much of another solid after the dinner feeding. But I'm still trying to nurse on demand until she is finished and unlatches. For now I want BM to be her primary source of nourishment...as it should be anyway...and not doing cereal, though my mother insists to as it 'might help her sleep better at night'.

  • How are you doing this? I put her in the bouncer or bumbo and spoon feed her.

When, in the day, are you feeding LO solids? 3 times. cereal in the morning and at night, and a vegetable or fruit in the afternoon.

Are you still feeding as much milk/formula as usual when it's time to feed a solid? Or do you decrease the bottle and make up for it with the solid? I usually give her half a jar of food and 2-3 ounces of formula afterwards.

At a solid feeding, how many ounces of milk or formula and how many of food is LO getting?  2-3

  • We are just giving solids for fun/practice when Im with him. I nurse him first then sometimes offer a few spoonsful of solids an 30 min-hour later. When I'm at work though since he still reverse cycles, he is offered solids 2-3x per day to tide him over until I get home.

  • In the morning DD gets rice cereal mixed with BM. That's about all she gets. We're not starting anything else till 6 months.

  • I really didn't want to do cereal but I think some of Howell's wakefulness at night is his tummy. His doc thinks his reflux will be tamed if he gets a little starch at night. We will confirm today about if he is ready and how much to give. Then if it doesn't seem to help, I will continue to hold off.

I really wanted to ebf until six months but it almost seems selfish on my part if a little cereal will help his poor tummy.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • FWIW the sheet my pedi gave us said to only do one "solids" meal a day, at her "second breakfast" (usually around 9-10 am), but while I'm at work, she doesn't get it. Only BM.

I tried mixing in the rice cereal with breastmilk and it is so soupy... sh.it got everywhere!! Then on Christmas we tried sweet potato for fun and she LOVED it. Think we're going to wait closer to 6 months to do it regularly, though.

Also, weird thing my pedi told me is that some doctors are recommending meats to start off with, vice veggies. Weird.

  • She gets bananas as an afternoon snack followed by BM.   She gets an ounce of bananas and her normal amount of BM.  Sometimes she wont finish the bottle but there is only an ounce left.   We just started her on Friday and she seems to like it.

  • We are giving DS a fruit in the am and a veggie in the pm. He normally eats the whole jar. We have not decreased his formula. He is a big eater.

  • We just started giving LO a tablespoon of oatmeal cereal mixed with a tablespoon or 2 of formula.  We usually give him the cereal about 30 min after his dinner bottle - and only decrease his bottle by the 1-2 Tablespoons that we take out.  We have only given cereal 4 times now - just for fun.  He's starting to get the hang of it and liking it, so I think we will do it more regularly now.  And eventually start with a veggie soon.
