a couple of days ago my lo started sticking two fingers in her nose (one in each nostril) and making a quacking sound while she does it. i thought it was funny and laughed at her, but dh got upset and told her no and to stop. we got in a disagreement over it because i thought it was natural and ok, and he said she would hurt herself and it was bad to let her do it. well mommy let her do it anyway, and sure enough, her nose got bloody. not BAD bloody but there was dried blood around her nostril when she woke up (happened twice). so now i am saying "ah-ah we dont do that" and she cries. wwyd? i agree it is completely natural and letting lo explore is completely fine, but how do you explain to a 15 month old that she shouldnt do something because it can hurt her?
Re: similar to the "exploring" post below...
we live on the beach in florida, so i dont think so, but thank you for the idea!
My daughter is discovering body parts as well; sure enough, those little fingers are just the right size to stick up their own nostrils! I try to just redirect her to other body parts -- "Yes, that's your nose; where are your ears? Where is your head?" etc.
I figure if I get too fixated on "no don't do that" it'll become a game/testing my boundaries type of thing, which I'll gladly avoid if I can.
Meh. I'd just ignore it. It obviously doesn't hurt her that bad or she'd stop. One day it will and then it'll be over.
It's weird kids hurt themselves like that..and they all do..but live and learn. There's no real harm.
