I just saw on your post on IF that you are involved in animal rescue. If you couldn't tell from my screen name and avatar, I am too. ;-) What kind of rescue are you involved with?

Hi Liz,

We literally rescue all kinds but try to stick with Dogs & cats but that doesn't mean this past year we didn't rescue many many horses, a few bunnies, an alpacka, two donkeys, a chicken and some rare African cows! We are a no kill animal rescue dedicated to trying to save the hard to place animals (think older dogs, or harder to place breeds like Pitties, or animals with Medical conditions). While we wouldn't turn away puppies and kittens, we try to help the harder cases (abused, hurt, neglected). We work very close with a lot of shelters in NJ and will be called in to help when an animals time is up - especially if they feel the animal has potential. We are in the process now of getting a building set up to run a full service vetting office and shelter that will hold many more animals than we currently can hold. I will be the first to admit that I am a total failure as a foster mommy - I have kept too many animals that came to me as a foster.

Oh, I just love what you do! There is a special place in my heart for the harder-to-place animals and I love that your organization works with them. As for me, I have volunteered doing all kinds of random rescue stuff: I was a volunteer vet tech for low cost spay/neuter clinic for while. I have also done all kinds of socializing, cleaning, adoption fair coordinating, animal-intaking, etc at dog/cat shelters. My "day job" has always been working in information technology management in the corporate world and in 2009 I was blessed to be able to transition my management skills to become the operations manager of a no-kill shelter. Sadly I was forced to leave because the director of the shelter was bat shnat crazy and I couldn't do my job whatsoever.

Now I'm just back to the volunteering side of things. Don't worry about being a bad foster mom, all three of our pets were failed fosters too and we couldn't give them up. ;-)

I'm curious if you are familiar with the kitty rescue in Pahrump, NV in 2008. Best Friends of Animals went in and rescued something like 700-800 cats that were hoarded in a big cement yard. They were in despicable conditions in the middle of the hot desert. We ended up fostering one 7 year old feral kitty from the rescue who wouldn't let anyone go near her without blowing a gasket. I'm happy to say that only three years later, Chloe is now the sweetest, neediest, and most affectionate lap cat you'll ever meet. She is proof an animal will come around with patience and love, especially the misfits. I have a special place in my heart for the misfits, which I use as a term of endearment.  Give me the 8 year old one-eyed, three-legged scraggly mutt over the designer purebred dogs any day of the week.

lol you sound like me. As a kid I had all the "misfits" that my mother couldn't find a home for. I had my "pirate" the 3 legged, one eye dog with no teeth.

Sorry the shelter job didn't work out. Unfortunately we have dealt with so many directors and managers of shelters that forget the reason why they are there.

I kind of do a lot of the same volunteer stuff you do except I do not get to do the daily walking of dogs because I get home to late and live too far from our shelter. I coordinate all the events (adoption, fundraising, appearances) as well as do the vet tech stuff mainly for the cats.

I am not familiar with that rescue but I am so happy Chloe found you to love her and I am sure she loves you right back.
