Day 9, no poop, ebf. XP from BF

Em has been ebf from birth and until he hit 4mos he's pooped like 5 times a day. He hit 4 mo and went 5 days w/out poo and it was pretty big when he did, but still soft, like mashed potato explosion.

Now, he's on day 9 of no poop. He's passing gas, nursing normally, normal wet diapers, not fussy, not in pain, by all accounts normal except for the poop situation.

NP over phone consultation says do glycerin supp., but admits she never sees ebf babies, almost everyone else supplements.

LLL leader over phone consultation says just feed baby every time he puts his thumb in his mouth and maybe try rectal stim.

My mom said take magnesium which will transfer to my milk, which I did this afternoon.

What say the wise bumpies? HELP!

Re: Day 9, no poop, ebf. XP from BF

  • My Ped. said that as long as there are wet diaps it is fine if poo stays at bay. He told me that with one of his own daughters she held out for 12 days, but then blew through 3 diaps when she finally went! Good luck!

  • I would give him a soppository. If you buy the children's, just cut in half. We used to have to give them to S a lot after the rice cereal thing. Anyways, I found the PediaLax liquid bulb ones work faster, as in instantly, than the tablets you stick up their butt. The bulb one kind of looks likes the nose sucker things. It sucks because they're pricey and you can only use half of the dose and then have to throw the rest away, but if you're looking for it to work right away, it's worth it.

Poor baby. S would be going nuts at 9 days. He can only go 2 or 3 days before his stomach is hard and he's screaming. He's EBF and has been since birth, so I call BS on that whole "EBF babies can go a week without pooping" thing.

  • I don't know if this will work for you, but it works like a dream for us. Everytime Elijah goes to the doctor and gets his temperature taken, he poops. I'm talking in, like, an "I didn't know that much poop could be inside of my child" kind of way. When he's been constipated in the past, I just put his rectal thermometer in and as soon as it dings, cue the molten lava poo.

So yeah, rectal stimulation. It works for some babies and it's definitely worth a shot.

    cue the molten lava poo.

This makes me laugh... every time.
  • I can't get past 9 days....! DS would be a nightmare. I hope it happens for you soon. I would try the temp option.

  • Nurse told me that breast milk is like laxative for them, so just nurse as often as possible.  If he's in pain I'd do the suppository.  If not, keep nursing.

  • 2 weeks is what both pediatricians we've had, have said for EBF babies. As long as he's not uncomfortable you don't need to do anything.

  • My little guy is EBF, and has been going longer and longer between poops. That said, I actually don't think there's anything to worry about at 9 days with an EBF baby. They just don't get constipated really. I recall reading something a while back (written by a ped) that said the record in his practice for an EBF baby was 21 days, and that baby was fine.  I've actually seen stuff warning against using a thermometer, etc., because it can lead to them depending on that stimulation to poop.  I'd let it go for now as long as his tummy is soft, undistended and he isn't feeling poorly.
