Help! how to Sleep train 4months adjusted

So my son was born at 30 weeks. He is now 4 months adjusted and my pediatrician recommended that I let him cry it out to learn to sleep alone. I absolutely have no intention of doing this. This may sound crazy but I feel like it will remind him of being in the NICU when he couldn't always be picked up.
With that said, I do want him to learn to fall asleep on his own, I know it's important. Anyone have any experience with getting their former preemies to sleep on their own? He's a fussy and feisty little guy:

  • Sleep training is usually not recommended until 6 months old. I would not consider ST prior to 6m adjusted.

  • DS was born at almost 35 weeks and we started sleep training at about 5 months adjusted.  He was down to 10 minute naps and was miserable so we had to go for it.  We used Ferber, which is progressive waiting, but there are other methods out there for anti-CIO people.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • My 9 month is having a horrible time sleeping these days. I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure it's from teeth. We tried to let her CIO for 10 minutes, but she just wanted to be held. Lots of cuddling on the sofa for now, because I hate to Sleep train if indeed it is teeth. Normally she falls to sleep in our arms and goes down in her crib without a fight and STTN.

  • If you don't want to sleep train DON'T.  Pediatricians are not sleep experts.  We did sleep train, but not until much later.  And, honestly, it just reduced the night wakings.  Kids eventually SSTN on their own.  Some just take longer than others...like my little friend who took 19 months.  No amount of sleep training could override his biology.

  • Thanks for all the speedy replies!
  • DD has sleep issues across the board, not just at night and her pedi recommended CIO today, I know this is a last resort recommendation because he has gone through everything else, but I'm with you op, I'm not a fan of CIO, I'd rather keep the sleepless nights and exhaustion then have DD CIO. I know that's more related to my issues with her nicu stay and severe reflux induced bradys and desats when she first came home, but CIO is not happening in this household. I don't have the stomach for it.
