asking to return a gift?

my SIL bought my DD this spinning riding turtle for christmas...we already have something very similar that is a horse....my parents also bought one of those plush rocking lady bugs so I kind of want to ask my SIL to take hers back....I don't want to waste their money plus we don't have room for it with the horse....is that rude? if she had provided a gift receipt I could have just done it myself but she didn't....

Re: asking to return a gift?

  • If it's the vtech turtle they carry them at most stores...I know toysrus carries them...without a receipt you'll only get store credit, but since it was a gift for your daughter then she could get something new she'll use and have room for.  I personally would not ask to return something unless my child had two, but that's just my comfort level.

  • I've been in this situation many many times because my husband's family cannot control themselves with gifts. Personally, I would just donate it.
  • I would try returning it to Toys R Us or Walmart. If they don't take it back, give it to your DCP, or Toys for Tots or something. (maybe this will sound bad)....Do you have any bdays coming up for family members or friend's kids? You could give it as a gift to them...?
  • You can still usually exchange something for store credit without a receipt. I think it is rude to ask the gift giver to do the returning for you.

  • You can try to look up what store carries it and return it for store credit. If that doesn't work I would donate it. Straight up asking is rude.

  • I personally think it's rude and wouldn't do it.  But then again, I always try to give gift receipts.  I probably wouldn't be offended if someone returned my gift, but I wouldn't want to know about it.  I'd rather they just do it and not tell me.  I would just return it without telling her.  If she comes over some day and wants to know where it is, just make up a little white lie.

  • I would keep it and just switch them out once in a while.. DD got 2 dream lites for her birthday, one night I'll turn on the butterfly the next night I'll turn on the Dog.. Just like having to switch up LO's toys because they get bored.. She'll eventually get tired on the horse and then you can bring out the turtle.. Funny thing: I also have the zebra and turtle.. Currently playing w/ the zebra.. OR like PP said you could find a store the sells them and get store credit..

  • Just depends on the gift giver.  In our family, no one would be offended if I asked for the receipt because DS got duplicates.  In fact, that actually happened on Christmas.  If I were the gift giver, I would rather my money went towards a gift the child actually wanted/needed/would use.

For some other family members though, I don't ask for the receipt.  Depending on the value of the present, I might try to return it w/o a receipt.  Otherwise I'm just keeping it for our garage sale or for re-gifting (gasp!).  DS got a ton of clothes for Christmas that he'll never wear, so I'm just keeping the tags on them and will decide how to sell, give, or donate them later.  It's not worth my time to try to return a $10 outfit.

  • I won't ask for receipts. My daughter got one of those xylophones for Christmas and she already has one so I'll just bring it to Walmart and try to exchange it. If no where will take it back I will just sell it on CL or donate it.
