my SIL bought my DD this spinning riding turtle for christmas...we already have something very similar that is a horse....my parents also bought one of those plush rocking lady bugs so I kind of want to ask my SIL to take hers back....I don't want to waste their money plus we don't have room for it with the horse....is that rude? if she had provided a gift receipt I could have just done it myself but she didn't....

Just depends on the gift giver. In our family, no one would be offended if I asked for the receipt because DS got duplicates. In fact, that actually happened on Christmas. If I were the gift giver, I would rather my money went towards a gift the child actually wanted/needed/would use.
For some other family members though, I don't ask for the receipt. Depending on the value of the present, I might try to return it w/o a receipt. Otherwise I'm just keeping it for our garage sale or for re-gifting (gasp!). DS got a ton of clothes for Christmas that he'll never wear, so I'm just keeping the tags on them and will decide how to sell, give, or donate them later. It's not worth my time to try to return a $10 outfit.
