Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Moms with 2 Toy question

I have a toy question for you. DD2 (almost 2) plays with everything DD1(4 1/2) plays with.

I feel guilty but sort of want to get rid of (sell, donate, WHATEVER!) a lot of the younger stuff (little people, and other random 'younger kid stuff').

Does this make me a bad mommy? Am I depriving DD2 of her 'babyhood' even though she prefers playing with her sisters dollhouse and old toys? What do I do?!

Re: Moms with 2 Toy question

  • The only reason I can see here to not do it is that at her age, she is learning through play.  So developmentally appropriate toys are important.  But if they are out and she is just straight up not interested in them because she wants to be like big sister, what's the harm?

  • Yeah... I mean I plan to keep things like the puzzles and stuff. But she is more concerned with playing with her sisters doll house than her little people one. I was thinking about buying her a set of 'family' dolls so she can have some ownership.

  • We have a lot of toys both love to play with but my biggest problem is DS doesn't really know how to play with it correctly. Play doh is still going in his mouth every time!

I would get rid of it. Someone got DS the pillow ride on toy which is age appropriate and cute but he wants to ride a trike (for 3 years old) and I think this will be short lived! All of our baby toys were gone by 12 months and many of our little people stuff is on the way out too (moved to geo trax cars,Thomas wood, play kitchen,  scooters and more 3+ stuff).

  • Maybe weed through some of the stuff that hasn't been played with in  months and some other stuff

  • I have zero guilt getting rid of pointless toys.  DS also plays with a lot of DD's toys.  For the past 6 months I've kept tabs on which toys of DD's he's also used as well as the ones specifically given to him.  Based on that I've been slowly getting rid of toys.  Just yesterday I told DD that since we just got new toys we should give some of our old ones to kids that don't have any toys.  She was more than happy to oblige and started picking out toys to donate.

  • DS also plays with everything DD plays with.  I do keep some younger toys in his room because he likes to go in there sometimes by himself and play and then he'll play with the Little people farm and stuff and I keep a couple things in the playroom.  But that's also because we are having another LO so we will still need them anyway.
