DD poop's at night and wakes w/ rash, Help!

We have dinner between 5:30-6pm, DD gets a bath, story, rock w/ bottle and then she goes in her crib where she puts herself to sleep.. all done by 7-7:30pm.. I'm assuming she has a BM while getting herself to sleep because the other night I went in to turn the volume down on her noise machine and smelled it.. It was midnight and she had barley slept all day and out of selfishness I didn't want to wake her to change her knowing she would wake w/ a rash.. Bad mommy I know Embarrassed Lesson learned.. Anyways the past 3 nights she has been having a BM while going to sleep ( I'm assuming) and I've had  wake her to change her.. Last Night I didn't notice a smell when I went in at 11pm but she woke at 1ish screaming! she had a poppies and has a rash, I changed her but couldn't get her to sleep until 5am!

Any thoughts on why she's all of the sudden having a BM while going to sleep or maybe even in her sleep?

  • Once in a great while, LO wakes up with a poop. It is super rare.

Have you tried just doing a good thick layer of a barrier to protect her skin? I know when LO was a tiny baby and we were working on getting her to STTN, we would do a thick layer of desitin before bed in case she pooped (she rarely did then either) because we stopped changing her at night so she'd sleep better.

You could try a thick coat of desitin or vaseline or aquaphor...it's still kind of gross that she'd be in poop for so long but it might help...that said I don't know if I could avoid waking her up to change her b/c I would worry about poop getting all up in her lady parts and her getting a UTI or something.

I as well put a thick layer of Vaseline on before bed but it seem to just rub off on the diaper and next to nothing is left on her butt.. Of course if I think she had a BM I will changer her, I learned my lesson.. I much rather have her lose some sleep then be in pain w/ a rash :( or much worse get a UTI... I'm now wondering if maybe we do dinner too close to bed time? Maybe I should give her more time to have a BM before going to sleep?

We generally do dinner at 5:30 and bed time is 7. Usually DD poops during her nap or in the morning at some point. Rarely she will poop right before bed/after dinner. It might be she is teething and having more poop than normal...or she might just stop and go back to her normal schedule.

Try desitin! it sticks better than vaseline or aquaphore.

  • DS poops often in the night.  It's always when he's putting himself to sleep.  I put on a layer of A+D ointment when he goes to bed.  Before I go to bed, which is after he's been asleep for a few hours already, I go into his room for a smell check.  If he's pooped, I change him.  Yeah, it wakes him up, but he always goes right back to sleep.

  • My DD's poop schedules go haywire for teeth for about a week and then return to normal.  There is just more poop in general before DD cuts a new tooth.  For her 4th molar at 16.5 months she pooped during most naps and at bedtime/overnight for 5-6 days.  She also had really little poops that we could smell but couldn't readily see, so was in a dirty diaper longer than usual until we figured that out.  Now she is back to her typical schedule. GL with your situation.
