motn feeding question

How much does your lo eat during motn feedings? Mine often eat as little as one ounce. Wondering if it's a cue that they are going to start sleeping longer soon. Next month DH starts traveling for work and my out of town guests help will be gone, so I'm hoping for longer stretches at night by then. My babies rarely nap during the day at the same time.

Re: motn feeding question

  • B will eat (twice  between 11p and 6a) I just started giving bottle in prep for my return to work at some point.

Two 4oz bottles sometimes a little less.

I nurse, so I don't know exactly - but Cooper only takes one side during the night, whereas during the day he takes both. He usually comes very close to falling asleep when eating. He's been doing this for a month+ now and sleeps one long stretch (6+ hrs) during the night and only usually wakes once to eat.

Ditto, though Aria sometimes only goes 4 hours. I'm asking the doctor today about trying to wean off this feeding since it seems it's more for comfort.

  • Def ask your pedi this.  Only because sometimes it becomes habitual and isn't actually needed.  LO sleeps from 9:30pm-10:30am or so.  She is lazy.

  • I read somewhere that once your baby hits 11 or 12 pounds, they don't metabolically need a nighttime feeding anymore.  HA!  That being said, my nearly 13 pound baby still wakes up once or twice in the MOTN to eat.  If he wakes up too early, I try to rock him back to sleep, which works about half the time (he's not a paci kind of baby).  Otherwise, I go ahead and feed.  There's no telling how much he's getting since he nurses, but when we've had to feed him bottles for his MOTN feedings, he rarely eats more than 3 ounces. When nursing, I offer both sides only to head off engorgement, since -- ow! -- I'm usually pretty full by then and don't feel like pumping at 3 in the morning.

  • Sounds like got lo is ready to cut out that feeding. Try giving a paci instead mine liked the ones shaped like the bottle nipple for this and see how long lo will sleep. Mine did 83 at first, then after a few days of using the paci he gave me 85 and soon after 87. If lo isn't eating, they don't need it.
And as far as the metabolism thing... I haven't heard that but I don't think it is at all true. My lo is 11 weeks old and only 8 lbs. He started sleeping completely through the night 3 weeks ago when he was around the 7 lb mark.
