Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Feeding troubles. Formula to milk question.

I'm new from the 9-12 month board. I have twin girls that just turned a year over the weekend and we are still on formula...4 bottles a day anywhere from 26-30 ounces a day still. My girls aren't eating more than purress and puffs at this point I'm just now starting them on solids. We've been struggling with the transition.

My question is is anyone else behind on this as well? Will they start dropping ounces of milk when they eat more solids?

I dont want to switch until I get them consistently on solids 3 times a day which i'm hoping will be in the next month or by their adjusted age which would be in February.

Sorry for the long post any help is appreciated.

Re: Feeding troubles. Formula to milk question.

  • DS used to drink TONS of formula (as much as 40+ oz per day).  Now that he's on whole milk, he drinks about 30 oz per day and still eats 3 solid meals and 2 snacks.  So, in his case, he did drop oz, but not a ton.  His nutritionist wants us to limit him to 20 oz of milk per day, but I think that's rather unusual.

I would probably do what you're doing - get them eating solids consistently before you drop the formula in favor of milk.  You could always ask their pediatrician, as well.

  • My LO was taking 30 ounces of formula a day before she switched last month to whole milk.  Our pediatrician told us to limit the amount of whole milk to 24 ounces a day as too much can cause belly cramping (I also researched this on the web and saw similar suggestions).  We started her off with 4 6-ounce bottles of milk per day and just in the last month, she's moved to only 3 milk cups a day.  In between, we offer her water and juice (well pretty much water with a splash of juice).  She also started to eat more solid foods once she switched to milk and got on a pretty good eating schedule.  I have a very picky eater so I can understand your struggles!  Good luck!
  • I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much. My pedi told us that at 12 months you drop the bottle and switch to milk cold turkey. Well that didn't work out at all and led to a hungry, angry baby and a crying mama! Eventually I started adding half milk to her 2 afternoon bottles then transitioned those to all milk after about a week. I don't know if it was the difference in taste or calories or what but she eventually started eating more during that time. Then I did the same with her morning bottle but gave it to her after feeding her 'solids' which at the time was just oatmeal with some puree mixed in. After a week or so I switched that to all milk as well. Once she seemed to be drinking the milk really well I changed over to sippy cups starting again with the afternoon bottles. She refused to drink milk from the sippy (but chugged water from them so I know the cup wasn't the problem) for maybe a week, then just up and started drinking milk out of it. Cold turkey works great for some people but I don't think it's the right solution for everyone (and was kinda ticked at my pedi that it was presented basically as an all-or-nothing proposition). My cousin who has 2 older girls told me while I was crying my eyes out....take your time...she isn't going to head to kindergarten with a bottle, so just relax!
