When to bring baby in for cold?

Mobile: when to bring baby in for cold?

I'm pretty sure DS has his first cold. He has a stuffy nose and will randomly cough just one little cough and he has been sneezing. So far no fever. I'm having trouble figuring out how long ago this started. He has had a stuffy nose since he was 3 weeks old, pedi said as long as it didn't interfere with eating we were ok. But the past few days it seems like he is more congested. He has been eating fine. Sleep had been normal but last night he was up way more often, we will see what tonight brings. This seems like a normal cold but I don't know at what point he should be seen. First time mom struggles.

Re: When to bring baby in for cold?

  • Sneezing can be normal. My LO sneezes all the time.

Last week my LO caught something from me. Mainly a stuffy nose and a sore throat. He would cough like he had a tickle. He didn't have a fever, he was eating, and still had frequent wet diapers. We had a doctor appt a couple days later anyways.

I used the nasal aspirator to help clean out his nose when he sounded a little more congested. The doc wasn't concerned. The only thing she said I could have also tried was a saline solution then suction out his nose.

As long as he is still eating, doesn't have a fever, and doesn't seem to be bothered but it all I wouldn't worry.

  • My pedi gave me pretty good instructions for when to call/bring in/ER. Granted these are her preferences, so you may want to call your pedi for advice. Fever of 104 ER. Not eating well and not producing at least 2-3 wet diapers a day (meaning LO's getting dehydrated) call because she'll want to check her. Otherwise if eating fine and low or no fever we can weather it at home by using saline nasal drops to help with the congestion and the bulb aspirator as a last resort because that can irritate the nasal membranes making congestion worse.
  • My pedi said don't bring him in unless he has a fever or the cold is affecting his eating . Mine has been sick for 2 weeks it sucks !

  • I turned the shower on hot and sat in the bathroom with LO when he was wheezy. The steam helped to loosen things up.
  • Call your pedi's office and chat with the nurse. They will recommend either what to do for lo at home or tell you if you need to come in.
