Preemies

Merry Christmas! And unfortunately, a PTL question...

Good morning ladies! I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday!

Question for you all. I've been on 17P for 11 weeks now (DS came at 34w 5d) and I'm like 99% sure I completely lost my mucus plug last night. I'm not having any kind of timeable contractions, just the normal/random BH that I've been getting. DD is still moving around like a maniac.

As a side note, I get my shot on Mondays and have begun noticing an increase of BH as the shot wears off (mostly Saturday and Sunday), but I've heard this can be normal.

Should I call my OB? I'm trying to walk that line between being paranoid and being proactive.

  • I ended up calling last night and they told me because there is no discharge, that its probably nothing. Call me paranoid, but I feel like they brushed me off. I was fine all day today, but started getting more cramps/BH tonight....after the office closed of course. I'm going to call tomorrow for an appointment. It'll just make me feel better.

    Thanks, ladies.

I had PTL with my second DD and I was on 17p shots from 16 week to 34 weeks (delivered at 34w 5d). I would definitely call the on call number if you start to feel contractions. The on doctor brushed me off on Friday night and by Sunday I was calling him again telling him I was heading to L&D because my contractions were timeable. Try drinking lots of water and laying on your left (which I'm sure you have heard a ton of times.)

Praying that you can keep baking little sister as long as possible. Please keep us posted.

  • Thank you for the well wishes, ladies. I'm not a regular on this board, but I know I can always come here and find people who understand my worrying.

I went to the OB today and I'm 1 cm dilated, but my cervix is still what my MW would consider long. She sent me to L&D for monitoring and while I was spiking some pretty serious contractions, the FFN came back negative (yay!!) so they deemed them "nuisance contractions" and told me I could take magnesium if they became distractingly uncomfortable.

I have another prenatal (27 weeks) on Monday and we're going to talk more then about what to do to monitor me from here since 1 cm can mean nothing, or it can mean trouble.

I'm so glad I called and asked for an appt. Thanks. :-)

  • just my two cents --

I would ask them to do a vaginal ultrasound to get an accurate cervix length and get a referral for a MFM doc. I would also ask about getting a course of steroids.

my short cervix was only apparent on ultrasound, not manual checks.  I was put on home bedrest following my ultrasound.  After three weeks of home bedrest, my cervix shortened even more (again, only apparent by ultrasound), I dilated to 1cm and I lost my mucus plug.  I was put on hospital bedrest and ended up delivering less than one week later.

  • i forgot to add -- there is disagreement in the medical community as to whether ffn test is really a good predictor.  i wouldn't consider the negative test results to be an assurance that you are out of the woods.

I also forgot to mention in my post that my ultrasound first showing cervix shortening was just a routine followup for spine measurements that they were unable to get at my 20 week ultrasound due to Julia's position.  It was total dumb luck they found my high risk of PTL (my first dd was full term with no complications).

I don't mean to scare you with my posts, but I'm a little concerned for you based on my similar symptoms resulting in a 30 week preemie.  From your description of your doc appointments and interactions, I would be a little more proactive.
