sushi alternative

so i love sushi!

i hate all the veggie rolls, i love the fish ones. i was bummed tonight since we went out for sushi. i told the waitress, she suggested tempura rolls. they are ok very oily and heavy. i like the sea weed and rice you know?

So she suggested getting a salmon roll that only the salmon is tempura then there is avo and cucumber wrapped in seaweed and rice. it was amazing! and tasted just the raw fish sushi

Re: sushi alternative

  • I love those. Was the tempura roll you tried a shrimp tempura roll? Those are usually pretty good and just have small piece of shrimp tempura inside so they aren't overly fried. Also a shrimp tempura handroll is a good option.

I also have been getting avocado sushi. It's basically just nigiri but instead of fish on top it's a slice of avocado. Seriously, so good.

No, I meant the one the waitress encouraged you to try that you felt was oily. What kind was that?

I've had some where the whole roll is fried in tempura- yuck. But the shrimp tempura rolls are good because the only fried part is the small piece of shrimp in the middle of the roll.

  • There is no need to avoid raw fish sushi.

Torture yourself if you want, but if it's from a reputable place, you only need to worry about mercury levels. Sushi is awesome and I've already had it two or three times while pregnant.

  • Crab, shrimp, salmon, and eel are all cooked, no need to get them tempura'd!

  • I have continued to eat the raw salmon. I can't stomach cooked fish, oddly enough. Really, they don't want you to eat raw fish because of the food poisoning risk. But if you have eaten at the restaurant many times before and never have gotten sick, you should be ok Mayo Clinic. It's what you are comfortable with.

  • My favorite right now is a fried halibut, avocado, and cream cheese roll topped with eel sauce. Seriously so good.

Me too. We just had it the other day. I always like a variety of cooked and raw rolls. Not planning to change my sushi eating habits.

This.  My RE told me it was just fine to eat coming from a reputable source.  Especially since we need to eat more fish!  Just watch the mercury levels.  That being said, DH and I went to sushi the other night and ordered our favorite rolls.  When reading all the ingredients we realized that they are both fully cooked! lol  One has a tempura shrimp INSIDE the roll (not the whole roll in tempura) with a cooked scallop and spicy sauce mix on top.  The other has crab inside and individual  tempura shrimps on each piece covered in a drizzle of sweet sauce.  I realized that about half of the rolls offered are actually cooked.  Take a double look at the menu and you might be surprised!!  :)

  • I personally wont eat raw fish because I would feel guilty doing so, even though there is nothing wrong. I know I would be nervous so I rather avoid it.

  • Well, have fun with that.

Believing old wives tales won't make you a better mom.

  • My mom has been making fun of me b/c I have my "list" of what I cannot eat.

She said " I ate  anything I wanted under the sun and all you kids turned out fine".    hahaaaha

I just want to be careful though. Good to know Tempura is safe. For sure missing my sushi lately. Thanks for the post :)
