food allergy help

If your LO had a food allergy how long did it take before you noticed a difference when you stopped eating the food causing the allergy?

Long story short....DS2 is not gaining enough weight.  Doc thought it was a supply issue, but I saw the lactation specialist and we suspect it might be a food allergy.  Some of the things DS2 is doing are not finishing nursing, he goes off the nipple and pulls away from me. Sometime he "pushes"me away with his hands.  So he is not getting enough BM throughtout the day. He usually nurses well during the night or if I feed him right after he wakes up and is still sleepy.  He also has cradle cap that has never gone away and I read that might be related to allergies.  Other things too..but I just dont know what is related to a potential allergy or just his personality.

So, basically I am eating just fruits, veggies, and meat.  If this helps I plan to figure it out from there.  The LC said I should notice a difference in about a week.

  • DS2 is 4.5 months if that makes any difference.

  • You might post also on the food allergy board if you haven't already.

Does he have any other issues aside from what you've described above - like poop weirdness or excessive spitting?

What happens if you try to re-latch him?  Do you spray milk?  The nursing well at night or when sleepy suggests a flow issue - like your milk is really fast and he gets irritated.

Two weeks is generally a time frame to start seeing a difference if it is an allergy although it can take longer.  But based on what you've described, I kinda suspect something else is going on based on the behavior at the breast.

  • I think a lot of it depends.  If it's a food allergy like cow's milk that's making him feel unwell with food and not eating because of that, then it should turn around relatively quickly - a week or so for the proteins to entirely get out of your system and his, a week for him to really pick up his eating, and maybe the third week you might start noticing gain.

If it's something like celiac disease (which is not an allergy), it would take longer, as he would need to heal any damage that had occurred first, and then could begin absorbing more food again.  (And it wouldn't happen as quickly if you aren't SUPER careful about the offending foods getting into your food.)

I hope the food allergy board has more help!

    Good luck!

  • When I gave up dairy and then soy, I was told to give 3 weeks for the "protien" to clear out of my and LO systems before I decided if that was the issue or not.  Give it longer than a week.
