DD will not allow me to file her nails +

She won't let me near her when she sees the nail file, omg! And if I try to do it while she's in her high chair the dramatics verge on ridiculous, like she turns beet red and has trouble breathing. Only SO was able to do them today, I have no idea why, we've never had any nail trauma! Anyone else? Or do your LOs just allow it?

  • My DD despises it.  I kind of have to hold her in a vice grip with my legs to get her to sit or stand still and I usually only get a few nails at a time with the clippers.  DH won't even attempt it.  I'd like to think it'll get better, but it's been a not fun chore from the get go here! She doesn't care what we do to distract her, a fight always ensues and we just tough it out.

  • DS will let me do a few nails at a time when he's in the mood. But, usually they just break off before I  get to them. Yaaaa, mom of the year :)

  •  i try and do my nails first, to show dd that we are having a manicure together.  Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

  • I use clippers - I've never tried to file.

It's pretty hard to get him to stay still. I might get one hand done before he gets too squirmy. Sometimes letting him watch tv helps since he rarely watches tv otherwise. Sometimes singing a song helps. Once, I got his toes while he was asleep in the carseat - when we got home, I pulled out the clippers and stood in the driveway and did it. Toes are always harder than fingers for us.

  • There are a few things I do to get DD nails tamed.. She doesn't freak out but she doesn't want to sit still..

She LOVES " Gummy Bare" song on youtube , Don't ask me why she loves it so much but it is the perfect length of distraction to at least get them clipped.. Its not the greatest video for lo to be watching Embarrassed

She loves to get her toe nails painted so I let her play in my nail polish bag while I do her nails.. She even takes the nail polish and puts them to her toes or holds out her fingers LOL..

I also let her play with the nail file sometimes.. I use one of my big filers because It seams to file quicker then the baby ones. She will also take the filer to her nails and toes in attempt to do it herself..

I would say distraction is the key to your success.. GL

  • Thanks, guys. I'm glad to know I'm not alone. And yes toes are worse for us too.

  • Until very recently DD hated having her nail done so much so that we started just letting them peel off (they never really got that long).  I often do my nails while supervising her bathtime  and last week she held out her hand and asked me to do hers too.  I was shocked and immediately took her up on the offer!
  • I put Elmo videos on youtube and quickly trim them.

  • I would try clippers. Also, right after a bath is a good time because the nails should be softer then and easier to clip. I put the tv on and hold her in my lap facing away from me. I have to really hold her still and not try to do too much at once. I also have clippers that have a large easy to grip handle so that makes it easier.

  • DD used to fight so bad that i just resorted until she fell asleep to do them. But recently i put some videos on my iPhone and so i let her hold it and do one hand at a time then she will use both hands and i can do her toes.

  • Why are you trying to file her nails?  I don't think it's ever occurred to me to even attempt that on my kid.  I just use a nail trimmer.  It's much faster.  Their nails are so soft and thin that they don't seem to ever chip or flake like mine do.  Maybe that's just my kids, though.    Do her nails get really sharp?  Will she let you just cut them instead?  Sometimes my kids hate getting their nails clipped, but if I sing to them or DH reads a story at the same time, they can be distracted into cooperating.

  • I started buying Mini M&Ms and I give her one for every nail she lets me clip. It works out really great for me because she does not squirm or pull away at all. I don't feel bad giving her 10 mini M&Ms once or twice a week to get them done.
