Color of urine

Sorry if this is TMI, but my urine is dark yellow. I've been drinking a ton of water. I have UTI symptoms, but no UTI. Could it be a kidney infection? Going to the ER later today possibly.

Re: Color of urine

  • What? Do people really go to the ER purely because their urine is a different color? Is this a joke?

  • That was kind of rude! Not the only reason I'm going!!
  • Unless you have a fever or severe back pain where your kidneys are, you likely do not have a kidney infection. Also, urine of a different color is not a symptom of a kidney infection, unless it is super cloudy or you are seeing blood.

As everyone said in your other thread, you probably do not have a UTI, considering you already had a test done.

If you are worried about the color of your urine, put in a call to your doctor (there should be an exchange that you can call on the weekend) - don't go to the ER for it though because this really does not sound like an emergency. Your urine color can change if you eat too many carrots (or other foods with high beta carotene) or take too much of certain vitamins. I know you are nervous because you are pregnant, but you really just need to relax.

  • How much water are you drinking?  You should be drinking roughly half your weight in water a day when you aren't pregnant, add in even more when you are

ETA: meaning a half oz of water per lb of body weight

  • My eyes are rolling out of my head right now.

Going to or calling your dr if you're concerned is one thing. Going to the ER is another thing entirely, if this is literally about the color of your urine.

OMG. ERs have limited resources and limited testing capabilities, that should be used for EMERGENCIES. Holy crap. I can just imagine the triage nurse when you explain your reason for visiting.

  • Vitamin b complexes make your urine VERY dark no matter how much water you drink. Is it possible you recently changed or increased your consumption of b vitamins?

     This.

Going to the ER is a bit much. If you are concerned call your doctor. I once had to go to the ER for urine color..... But it was red, then turned to black. I had kidney stones. Good luck.

  • Is there an after hours urgent care available? This does not sound like it warrants a trip to the ER, but if you are concerned you can go to or call an urgent care. Otherwise does your OB have a triage nurse on call? I might start there

This.  And, how do you know you don't have a UTI?  If it's because you went to the Dr. then they should already KNOW about your dark urine.  If they aren't concerned I wouldn't worry about it.

You asked our OPINIONS on your dark urine.  1) If you don't want our opinions don't ask for them!  That seems obvious to me.  2) If your going to throw a fit and tell us we're wrong, then tell us the whole story to begin with!  Obviously there's some other "mystery reason" you would go that your aren't sharing.

Sorry, I did ask for opinions....just not people to be so rude! I have seen the doc she said it wasn't a UTI. My urine just started turning dark today. And I have extremely bad back pain. Also, other UTI symptoms! I guess I was clearly asking if people thought it could be a kidney infection. Just wish people wouldn't talk the way they did :. Sorry!
  • She did see a doctor and has been tested for UTI they said it was negative and she was fine!

You all ready posted about this!

  • A kidney infection usually develops from an untreated UTI that travels up the kidneys. You would most likely experience some serious symptoms such as flank/side pain. If you think you may just have a UTI but no uncomfortable pain or other symptoms just go to your doctor or an urgent care clinic to have them test your urine and give you antibiotics. Don't go to the ER for this unless you are experiencing more serious symptoms (fever, burning/painful urination, side or abdominal pain, bloody urine).

To answer this question, no. I mean, it could go there too. But there's no reason why it couldn't go here.

OP, I sincerely hope you didn't waste the time & resources at the ER and take them away from people who actually need them.

And if you don't want opinions, don't post questions. If you do post questions and you get opinions you don't like, tough titty said the kitty.  But on your big girl panties.

ETA: I'm guessing there will be a DD in the near future...

ETA2: FWIW, when I switch vitamins or start taking new ones, they can upset my bladder and turn my pee funny colors. It's very common for me until I get used to the vitamins.

  • If you ask for opinions, you can't dictate how people will respond to you.

Typically, your UA will come back with organisms if you have a UTI or kidney infection. A kidney infection usually develops from an untreated UTI. So if your UA was negative, it's highly doubtful you have a UTI or kidney infection. Don't waste the ER's time by going in. They're going to tell you the same thing. I've had lots of kidney infections and UTIs, and you'd know if it's a kidney infection. you'd be running a fever and it would feel like someone kicked you in the kidneys. If you're that worried about it, call your doc and go buy some cranberry pills and start taking them. But FFS, please stop posting the same questions about it over and over.

  • It's the way that people are responding to her that is uncalled for! You know how many post I have read over and over and over again about spotting and cramping, and those ladies hardly got the same response this OP got. Not fair, and insensitive. I'm sure opinions are welcomed, but you all don't have to be rude about it.

    Just saying...

And what do you all care about ER resources anyways lol. I'm a nurse and I've had patients come in for the tiniest thing, and it turns out being a devastating diagnosis. So don't judge. That is all
