XP: Help on middle name for Elliot (girl) and boy name question...

Let me start by saying I know that traditional boy names used for girls is not very popular on this board.  However, my husband and I really like Elliot for a girl (he is 100% and I am leaning that way).  We may spell it Elliette just so that it is clearly female when written (again realize this is unpopular on this board).  Anyway, the opinion that I am seeking is on the middle name.  I want something clearly feminine and i am having trouble finding a great pairing. I like Elliot Lilly but I think it is too many Ls.  Maybe Elliot Aubrey - but still don't 100% love it.  Would love any opinions on the middle name...

Also, we are team green and still trying to come up with boy names.  My mother's maiden name was Davis, which I love but I don't really care for Dave.  Do you think Davis would automatically translate into Dave?

Thanks!

  • You know Aubrey is a boy's name as well?  On school rosters, everyone would expect your child to be a boy.  In recent years, it's become a girl's name, but it's traditionally a boy's name.

How many syllables do you want for the mn?

Love Davis for a boy.  I don't think it'll go to Dave.  Davis is easier to pronounce than David (the S is easier on the tongue than the D), so I don't think people will call him Dave.  And no one will call him Dave if you train them not to.  My husband is Matthew, never Matt.

  • Please keep the traditional spelling of Elliot.  Your "girl" spelling looks wrong and, as a teacher, I can tell you it will get mispronounced and misspelled often.

I would also do a very girly mn.  I like Lily.  Other suggestions: Audrey (since you like Aubrey), Corinne, Iris, Grace, Kristine, Paige.

  • I have seen Elliot on a girl before and it doesn't bug me. I love the nn Ellie. As for mn I don't really like Elliot Aubrey. Its missing something in flow. I also think the idea that Aubrey being a "boy" names is completly outdated. It is all girl to me in this day and age.

    Suggestions:

    Elliot Love

    Elliot Nicole

    Elliot Madeline

    Elliot Marie

    Elliot Rose

  • I disagree with the others on the spelling. If you're set on a boys name for a girl, I prefer the more feminine spelling, and I think Elliette looks kind of cute. I agree with the PP that there might be more emphasis on the "ette"

I like Elliette Marie, or maybe Elliette Sophia.

  • I agree something feminine would be good for a MN. Maybe something more classic like Katherine or Elizabeth. I say keep the correct spelling of Elliot instead of the made up girl spelling. It looks like you're trying too hard.

I knew a Davis in college. Nobody called him Dave. Davis is a short name so it doesn't need a NN. I really like it. Btw, my father is David and nobody calls him Dave either.

  • Elliot spelled the traditional way gets my vote, and I really like Davis. I think something short and sweet pairs well with Elliot, how about:

    Elliot Ivy

    Elliot Pearl

    Elliot Ann

  • I don't mind gender-bending with names - but I DO mind misspelled names. It looks very trashy, and makes the parents look like they can't spell. Go with Elliot!

Elliot Aubrey is very pretty, in my opinion. I slightly prefer Elliot Audrey because Audrey is girlier.

    Other suggestions:

    Elliot Christine

    Elliot Mae

    Elliot Claire

    Elliot Elyse

    Elliot Cecilia

    Elliot Marie

    Elliot Isabelle

    Elliot Anne

    Elliot Josephine

    Elliot Brynn

As for the boy name, I love the idea of using Davis! If anyone says Dave, just correct them - and although I know you don't like Dave, it gives your child an option to use a nickname if he wants to later on in life.

If you are going to use Elliott for a girl, OWN it and spell it right.

Aubrey is also technically a boy name so that won't make your daughters name scream girl. I would use something like Catherine or Sofia that is in no question girly.

I do not think Davis will translate to Dave.

This. However, I prefer to see it spelled Elliot.

    Your MN ideas are NMS.

    Suggestions...

    Elliot Clare

    Elliot Faith

    Elliot Jade

I like the name Davis, but would probably use it as MN.

  • Spell it however you want, but I do think either way you and your daughter will have to explain either that "no, Elliott is a girl" or "No, it's actually pronounced el-lee-uht.

As far as middle names, I tend to prefer names with 3 syllables to have the other name one syllable.  In which ever order.

  • Elliot for a girl is NMS but if you use it don't use a made up spelling and go with a girly middle name.

I like Davis a lot for a boy and don't automatically think Dave.

  • I hope so much that you have a boy...

Elliot is bad enough, but Eliette is just awful.

I like your boy's name though.
