Thawed BM post ?

So the last 2 bags of BM I have thawed pumped on different days have both smelled like wet cardboard. I have no reason to believe that anything happened to the frozen milk in the freezer but this seems weird. I haven't tasted it but my DD doesn't want to drink it but she hasn't had that many bottles in general. Any ideas?

Re: Thawed BM post ?

  • I have an issue with my frozen BM but not sure why.  Mine tastes rancid!  My fresh lasts for a couple of days in the fridge but the frozen stuff that was frozen right after pumping is awful.  I've used the ice cube type trays that are for BM freezing as well as two different BM bags and all is bad.  Not sure what to tell you as I couldn't find anything online except I could be storing it to freeze incorrectly (but it doesn't make sense since ALL of my frozen BM is bad, no matter how I store).

    Try tasting yours to see.

Have you tried heating/boiling it? I dont know the specifics or how hot to get it but I heard this helps if you have lipase issue.

  • I tasted mine against freshly expressed BM and the frozen tasted "off" but it did not taste sour or rancid, more fishy.  I was doing some research as well and am also wondering if I have that lipase issue.  I think you have to boil the BM before you freeze it, which also takes away some of the good qualities in the BM.  It's just weird because I didn't have any issues with my first DD and I am pretty much going to freak out if it turns out all my frozen BM is bad. :(

That helps with the lipase issue.  Lipase makes the BM taste soapy and not rancid.  Mine is not a lipase issue unfortunately.
