Wean MOTN feeding

I need advise.  My son is 10 weeks old and has just started sleeping in his own crib.  I just started putting him to sleep around 8pm.  Sometimes he's sleep by 9/10p, sometime midnight.  He goes back to sleep really well after he wakes up for  feedings, but is still waking up every 3 hours like clockwork.  Is there a way to eliminate one of the MOTN feedings? Im still waking up 3 times at night to BF.  Is it too early?

  • Are you able to soothe him back to sleep in other ways, or is he waking up truly hungry? The only trick I know is nursing frequently right before bedtime so they go to sleep with a full belly. If you can master the dream feed when you go to bed that helps some moms too. I've tried this with my LO and I wake her up too much then she wants to party.

I've read sleeping through the night is a skill to be developed, not just a food issue, so babies will do it when they are ready.

  • Well if he's waking up bc he's  hungry then he needs to eat you can't wean him off that- he's too young

Yes, some babies STTN at this age or at his weight but not all.

My guy is 9 wks old and still gets up once at night to eat.

You can try cluster feeding in the evening- maybe up his feedings if you bottle feed add a bit more to each bottle during the day.

You put hiim down at 8- well I would feed him again right before you go to bed.  if he's sleeping then just dream feed.

    I agree with this.

  • I agree with other posters. Your LO probably isn't ready to go that long without eating. My DD is 10 weeks and she still gets up every 3 to 4 hrs at night to eat. She's never slept longer than that and I'm not concerned. The pedi said breastfed infants sometimes take longer to get to sleeping through the night.

  • If he is just fussy or making noises but not crying wait a minute or two before getting him. If it has been 3 hours try comforting him rocking or patting to see if he settled. However I would try for about 5 min before giving up and feeding him he may not be ready. Try to feed every 2 hours before bed.

  • I don't think CIO is recommended until 4 months at least, and even that is a little early. We don't plan on doing anything until 6 months. My daughter was sleeping really well at night (about 50/50 STTN) until I went back to work and now she is back to 1-2 night feedings. I know she is really hungry and she wants to spend time with me (reverse cycling) so I would find it cruel to punish her for it at this point. Just my opinion. I hear the Ferber book itself is a great read for learning about infant sleep (I haven't read it yet).
