Cloth Diapering

Favorite inserts?

What are your favorite hemp, bamboo, or cotton inserts, soakers, or boosters? And with your pocket mf dipes do you find you usually need extra absorbency to avoid leaks? Or that you have to change more often? My pfs and fitteds seem to be much more absorbent. TIA!

Re: Favorite inserts?

  • We don't need any extra absorbency in our pocket diapers. 1 insert does fine for about 3 hours during the day.

For nighttime, we are just starting to need more than 2 MF inserts at night. Sometimes I add a small hemp insert where she wets the most.

I haven't used much for doublers since we don't really need them yet but I am loving hemp.

  • I love the Alva baby bamboo/MF blend inserts as well as my charcoal bamboo inserts which aren't branded.  You can get those from B/S/T groups on Facebook or Ebay. We have needed more than a single MF for anything longer than 3 hours since DS was about 2 months old!  So for nighttime we use a pocket with one MF and one CBI typically which will get us up to 9 hours (we usually change at 6-7 hours since he wakes up eat).  We are just getting to the point where I think we will need to start using more than one MF during the day as they are only lasting really 1-1.5 hours.  I don't mind changing that often but he gets leaks at day care.

  • I like my Thirsties and Babykicks hemp inserts and the Kawaii bamboo inserts, no problems with any of them.  During the day with my pockets usually a large MF insert is fine but for nights, naps, or outings I use a hemp or bamboo with it to avoid leaks because of the longer stretches of time.

  • I like Babykicks hemp inserts, too. I have a heavy wetter, so for ON we use a RaR or Charlie Banana OS with one microfiber insert and one hemp. Most nights that's enough to hold him for 11-12 hours.

  • I absolutely need extra absorbency with pocket diapers. If we're at home I use both the OS and newborn inserts for my BG 4.0s. If we are going out and may not be able to change right away, I stuff with the OS MF and a Babykicks hemp insert.

In the rare event we use a pocket for ON (we are almost always fitteds and wool) it's a Kawaii HD stuffed with a Flip organic and a Babykicks hemp.

  • Thanks! I think I'll try out the babykicks. I'm not finding sizing info though and it looks like they come in 3 sizes. My LO is 15 lbs now, and I'd like to use these as she grows...should I just get large?

I have both mediums and large. The medium fits slightly better in a BG pocket on the 2nd rise setting. And it fits much better as an extra insert in my overnight fitteds than the large. I will likely use both sizes until PL-ing.

What kind of pockets do you have, though? If it's mainly FuzziBunz, I would look for the BabyKicks one size insert because the regular sizes are too wide to fit into a FB pocket.

I could have written this one myself, except that I don't use the MF inserts at all.  I've started cleaning with them because I have so many bamboo blends and CBIs that I'll never need to use them in a diaper.  So far, one CBI in a Kawaii GNHW, CBI in my Greenchild Designs fitted or sbish snapless works at night.

I have BG with a couple Bumpkins and lotus bums. I'll order medium for now, thanks!

  • So far my only CDing experience is overnight. What's worked best for my 2.5 yo is 2 Kawaii bamboo inserts and 1 premium Joey Bunz hemp insert. We use either a Kawaii or Alva pocket diaper. I have some BG, but they're too tight around her legs.
