My toddler had croup for the first time a couple months ago. The barking sound was pretty noticeable, but i wasn't sure because it didn't sound exactly like the sound clips online. He had long coughs that ended in a barking sound. The clips online were all short, barking coughs.
I've never experienced whopping cough, but they say an infant won't always have the distinctive whooping sound like adults do. However, it's supposed to sound pretty horrible so I think you would definitely be heading to the doctor if you heard it.
I think it's probably a good idea to go to the doctor since it's Friday and we are heading into a holiday week. I always take my kids in sooner if it's the weekend or a holiday is coming up just to avoid urgent care or the ER if I can.
Sorry for any typos, I'm on my phone while nursing the baby and have a 2 year old playing horsey on my knees.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

My DD was tested for whooping cough... Her pedi said babies don't always have the whooping sound, but DD was choking with each cough and he said that can be a sign. Her test was negative though, so it was just all the congestion making her cough.
