Food Allergy

Elimination Diet

After visits to a pediatric GI and stool testing, we know that DS has an allergy.  I have been off of dairy for a month and soy for two weeks now, but his stools are not improving.  So with the suggestion of an LC, I have decided to try an elimination diet before starting elecare, which the GI has written a script for.  When I had initially researched what this would entail, I was under the impressions I could eat ONLY chicken and turkey, potatoes, rice, squash and pears.  As I research further, I am finding guidelines (from the UW Integrative Medicine Dept of Family Medicine, specifically) that allow a much wider range of initial foods, including the foods already listed plus some nuts, all fruits and vegetables, and some oils.

So, has anyone here done an elimination diet before?  If so, would you please share what you ate and what your results were?  Thanks so much.

Re: Elimination Diet

  • I did the total elimination diet for 2 weeks, but I was told no chicken, only turkey and lamb as far as meat goes. It was tough. I relied on spices and olive oil a lot to make my meals interesting. I found bread at whole foods that was basically made of rice and I drank pear juice when I wanted something other than water. I made some tasty racks of lamb with garlic and rosemary and several lamb meatloafs with recipes I found online that only had spices as the other ingredients. I also ate a lot of ground turkey with different spices and put it on top of rice or quinoa pasta.

LO did get better, but in hindsight I think it was because I got SO strict with cutting out soy (along with everything else). After that, I was able to add back everything but dairy and soy and LO has flourished. He is still MPI, but can tolerate soybean oil now.

  • I was looking into it on the Dr. Sears website and it sounded like it was turkey, lamb and pears for two weeks. Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies.  I'm down to turkey, pears, squash, rice and potatoes right now.  I didn't know I could use spices and olive oil- that will at least liven things up a bit!  My LC wants me to call her Friday to update her and then we'll take it from there, as far as what and when to start adding things back in.

When you did start adding foods back in, did you add whole food categories in at a time (say for example, tree nuts), or a specific single food at a time (walnuts)?
