Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Not drinking milk Ever!

Ever since we took my lo's bottle away from him at 17 months,he's 20 months now he will not drink milk from sippy cup! I've tried white whole milk, 2 milk, chocolate milk and vanilla almond milk . He will only drink water and some juice. He takes a vitamin, but what can he do for calcium? It's weird to see a child not drinking milk. Any ideas?

Re: Not drinking milk Ever!

  • Have you tried a real cup?  DD is 19 months and starting to refuse a sippy cup but loves a real cup.   Other options are smoothies, soups made with milk, infant or toddler cereal mixed with milk.

  • We still give DS milk or toddler formula in a bottle in the morning and he is 18 months... our pedi said this was fine so long as he was using a cup or sippy during the day and that we weren't giving him a bottle for bedtime...

The main reason we still give him the milk in the bottle is because he gets really bad gas when he drinks it from a sippy... nothing else just milk (which doesn't make sense but whatever); however, the toddler formula is also in place of a vitamin so I'm not sure when we will make the switch even though I'm sure DS wouldn't have to big of a fit if we threw out the bottle...

  • When I weaned my son at 16 months he didn't take to milk very well. I brought my concern to the pediatrician because I thought that kids needed to drink a bunch if milk. He told me that milk is just a beverage and as long as he was eating food with dairy he was ok. I make sure my son gets yogurt daily and he loves cheese so if he goes a day with a little less milk I don't worry. Just try to work in calcium rich foods if he isn't drinking milk. Also try giving him milk in different types if cups or sippys. My son wouldn't drink out if certain sippys. It took us a good month to find one that he liked.

  • My son never drank milk. It's really no big deal. Yes, milk is an easy source of healthy fat, calcium and vitamin D. There are plenty of other food sources you can get those nutrients from. Vitamin D is easy--20 minutes of outdoor play a day is all you need for that. Healthy sources of fats include avocado, nuts and extra virgin olive oil. Almonds, broccoli, and sesame seeds are a few non-dairy sources of calcium as well. Naturally, yogurt and cheese are good options as well.

  • Similar here --- at 16 mos we stopped the morning and afternoon bottles (still have nighttime bottle).  DD prefers the milk room temperature and will use a straw or a small open cup (e.g. shot glass).  DH has the most success by giving her a small bowl of milk and she dips her peanut butter bread into it and soaks it ALL up.  Otherwise I'm all for diary in foods - cottage cheese is a hit for DD.  GL!

  • Does he eat yogurt and eat cheese? If yes then don't worry, he'll get it from his other dairy intake.

  • My son won't drink milk from a cup either. Actually, nothing but water can go in his cup. Our pediatrician said to just give him cheese and yogurt and other sources of fat and calcium.

  • Same here once we stopped bottles he won't drink milk out of anything.  But milk isn't necessary. As long as calcium rich foods are offered you are fine.  He loves water and I want to keep it that way!
