Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Falling/Crawling out of Crib

Set DS in his crib so that I could run to the bathroom to pee.... He wasn't too happy and next thing I know I hear a thud and he's still unhappy... Yelled for DH (since I was in the bathroom) who came running and sure enough DS had fell/crawled (idk which) out of his crib... sooooooo, now what?

If DS can get out of his crib, do we move him to the other crib that has the drop side permanently in the down position, change his crib to a toddler bed, or just leave everything the way it is? What did y'all do when you hit this point?

Re: Falling/Crawling out of Crib

  • DD crawled out of her crib right in front of DH at 15 months and would have fallen on her head if he was not there to catch her.  DH was so shook up that he changed her bed to a toddler bed that day.  She did wonderful in a toddler bed.  She hardly had any transition issues at all - after a few days she noticed her new freedom and would get out of her bed to play quietly for a few minutes before falling asleep, but that was it.  I didn't catch how old your DS was, but you could try the toddler bed or you could try turning the crib around so that the lower side is against the wall so he cannot crawl out as easily.

  • Drop side cribs are illegal. You can request a kit from the manufacturer to prevent the side from moving, but they are not safe for kids. I'd try doing the toddler bed thing, and maybe look in to getting a play yard as a place to put LO while you have to leave the room. GL!

    Just for clarification purposes:

Drop side cribs are illegal to manufacture and sell, not use... And it doesn't go up or down... The side is immobile which is exactly what the kits do, except in the up position... Which can be done with our second crib if necessary.... The concern is that the side would detach and come down on a baby's head.... Ours is already down

The only reason I thought about using it permanently in the down was because it would be like a side rail with no gaps or climbing in and out of bed spaces at the end since DS still moves a lot.... I'll have to see if our toddler bed has any gap/spaces....
