Antibiotics

DS is currently on Amoxicillin for an ear infection. Usually his BM's are a little harder, and maybe once or twice a day. He has been having blow outs, and watery BM's since yesterday (2-3 times a day- started taking medication on Monday night). We called the pedi and are waiting for a call back. Anyone else have this happen with your LO's? It's common, right?

Add a probiotic to his bottle 2x a day... We just did one cultural pill opened into my daughters morning and night bottle.hth

This is a very common side effect with antibiotics, so is vomiting. Encourage liquids (water or diluted juice in a sippy cup) and monitor for dehydration, although that is rare. I'm a nurse and this is what I tell parents when their child is given an antibiotic. The medicine is destroying the bacteria in her ears that is causing the infection, but is also killing the normal, healthy bacteria in her GI tract that regulates digestion.

I forgot to add that you can give whole milk yogurt to your baby and that may help with the diarrhea.

PP answered beautifully, but I wanted to reassure you that our first antibiotic was a doozy. He was throwing up so much that we had to cut back on it. The next time we got one, it was different, and MUCH better on his tummy. Then... the most recent one was even easier on him. I hope your LO feels better soon! Love your collage!
