I'm the poster that's been tortured by the popularity of my fave girls name.
Sofia.
(Last name is Italian, so we're going with that spelling )
I've loved this name for-ever. HATE HATE that it's #1 not only in the U.S. but also in my state. It's bugging me so much I can't seem to get over it.
Then, today I see a commercial for a new Disney movie "Sofia - the First". Really?! Gee, thanks Disney for that dagger to my already insecure heart. Not too mention I am soooooo not into princess-y stuff and am trying hard to avoid an all pink wardrobe for this DD. (Which is actually hard to do! Where are the non pink girls clothes out there?!)
Sorry to keep posting about this! I've never posted this much on any topic.
Re: Another dagger to my top name, thanks Disney
I'm now starting to annoy myself with this topic. I'm really not normally this neurotic.
Maybe I just need to let the name go. If I truly loved it, wouldn't I not care about how it ranked? And stop writing these insufferable posts?
My DD has another girl in her class with the same name and I believe there is one more in the grade. So not 6 but still more than I would like!
I mean, Sofia is a gorgeous name, and insanely popular before STF.
But you knew that already! I don't think STF is going to make this name any more popular, KWIS? Like you said it's #1 in several states-- so it can't get more popular than that!
And just as an aside-- I get a lot of really cute, inexpensive non- pink clothes for Josie at H & M.

FWIW, my sister and her DH had picked out Sophia as their girl name before they were married and now that she might be PG with a girl, it's off the table due to popularity. They still really like the name, but it lost its luster.
The kicker? They're leaning toward Charlotte, which seems to be heading down the same path. I'm not getting involved. Their child, their choice.
We have a second name we like very much, but it has it's own issues as well. An ancient Roman name, Livia. (Again our last name is Italian, DS has an Italian FN, we're pretty set on an Italian FN for DD)
With this name there's the issue of will she be correcting people, "no, not Olivia just Livia" ,even though Livia predates Olivia no one knows that. Then the alliteration with my DS's name Luca kinda bugs my DH.
With DS we liked several names and had no issues with them, we just decided to wait to see him and instantly said, he's "Luca". I never thought naming this girl would hold so much conflict.

Completely forgot about H & M for kids clothes! Thanks for the reminder!
Not to make it worse for you, but that Sofia The First movie, they have now made into a cartoon show on Disney Jr.
But, to try to be positive, it was just a "made for Disney Jr movie", not like box office release type of thing.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
Yes Sofia the Princess is really popular now. She will be getting her own show and will also be in the Disney Parks. However, these shows only last for a few years before they are replaced with something new.
My first was named Sophia because we loved the name and didn't care if it was popular. I figured it was popular for a reason. All of my favorite girl names are popular and I don't care, we like them.
I say name your baby whatever you like.
FWIW, next year they are coming out with a new princess movie with a princess Anna. My friend has a DD named Anna and she actually thinks it is cute.
Great way to look at it! Thanks!
Very wise words.
Personally, I have a common name but an unique spelling. I really don't like it. I am constatnly correcting people on the spelling and the pronunciation of my name. Trust me it gets really old especially when people get your name wrong on important documents like wedding announcements and deeds. The announcer at my college graduation even pronounced my name wrong.
Here's the thing. I am unique and special because of who I inherently am. My character, my strenghts, me weeknesses, my personality, my interests...all of that makes me special, not how my name is spelled.
I know three Sophia's all under the age of 3. It's WAY popular right now. I'm pretty sure it's going to the be Jennifer of it's day.
This. If you really were set on it and loved it "so" much, you wouldn't be so focused on how popular it is or posting about it. I'd change it.
SCANDAL!
