Baby Names

Another dagger to my top name, thanks Disney

I'm the poster that's been tortured by the popularity of my fave girls name.

Sofia.

(Last name is Italian, so we're going with that spelling )

I've loved this name for-ever.  HATE HATE that it's #1 not only in the U.S. but also in my state.  It's bugging me so much I can't seem to get over it.

Then, today I see a commercial for a new Disney movie "Sofia - the First".  Really?!  Gee, thanks Disney for that dagger to my already insecure heart.  Not too mention I am soooooo not into princess-y stuff and am trying hard to avoid an all pink wardrobe for this DD. (Which is actually hard to do!  Where are the non pink girls clothes out there?!)

Sorry to keep posting about this!  I've never posted this much on any topic.

  • Sophia will be our girl choice, too.. Sophia Quin, to be exact.  I don't let it bother me.. I selected that name years ago because I loved it.. I tell myself that because there is such diversity n names these days, even though its the top name, the likelihood of multiple people in her classes having that name are slim.. It's not like 25 years ago when Ashley was the top name and I had 6 of them in my grade... Or so I'm telling myself that!

  • I'm now starting to annoy myself with this topic.  I'm really not normally this neurotic.

Maybe I just need to let the name go.  If I truly loved it, wouldn't I not care about how it ranked?  And stop writing these insufferable posts?

My DD has another girl in her class with the same name and I believe there is one more in the grade. So not 6 but still more than I would like!

  • I mean, Sofia is a gorgeous name, and insanely popular before STF.

But you knew that already!  I don't think STF is going to make this name any more popular, KWIS?  Like you said it's #1 in several states-- so it can't get more popular than that!

And just as an aside-- I get a lot of really cute, inexpensive non- pink clothes for Josie at H & M.

  • Honestly, I think that if you're obsessing over Sofia this much, then it's probably not the right name for you.

FWIW, my sister and her DH had picked out Sophia as their girl name before they were married and now that she might be PG with a girl, it's off the table due to popularity. They still really like the name, but it lost its luster.

The kicker? They're leaning toward Charlotte, which seems to be heading down the same path. I'm not getting involved. Their child, their choice.

Would you be disappointed 20 years from now of you didn't use it? Do you have any other names that are ranked any where close?

We have a second name we like very much, but it has it's own issues as well. An ancient Roman name, Livia. (Again our last name is Italian, DS has an Italian FN, we're pretty set on an Italian FN for DD)

With this name there's the issue of will she be correcting people, "no, not Olivia just Livia" ,even though Livia predates Olivia no one knows that.  Then the alliteration with my DS's name Luca kinda bugs my DH.

With DS we liked several names and had no issues with them, we just decided to wait to see him and instantly said, he's "Luca".  I never thought naming this girl would hold so much conflict.

Completely forgot about H & M for kids clothes!  Thanks for the reminder!

  • Not to make it worse for you, but that Sofia The First movie, they have now made into a cartoon show on Disney Jr.

But, to try to be positive, it was just a "made for Disney Jr movie", not like box office release type of thing.

  • Yes Sofia the Princess is really popular now.  She will be getting her own show and will also be in the Disney Parks.  However, these shows only last for a few years before they are replaced with something new.

My first was named Sophia because we loved the name and didn't care if it was popular.  I figured it was popular for a reason.  All of my favorite girl names are popular and I don't care, we like them.

I say name your baby whatever you like.

FWIW, next year they are coming out with a new princess movie with a princess Anna.  My friend has a DD named Anna and she actually thinks it is cute.

  • I love baby names but here's my two cents on it.  You pick a name for your child because it's a name you love.  You name your child what you want because no one else can or has to.  If you love a name use it.  We are so fixated on having our children be 'unique' and 'individual' that we put all this pressure on to name them something no one else has thought of yet!  Your child will never be the only kid in the world with a certain name, so if you love the name Sofia or Livia, use it. Otherwise if it is really going to make you crazy that there is someone else with that same name, I would suggest going way farther off the radar then old Italian names.  FWIW, Sophia was our top girls name because it had family history to us so we would have used it regardless. Good luck.

Great way to look at it!  Thanks!

    Very wise words.

Personally, I have a common name but an unique spelling.  I really don't like it.  I am constatnly correcting people on the spelling and the pronunciation of my name.  Trust me it gets really old especially when people get your name wrong on important documents like wedding announcements and deeds.  The announcer at my college graduation even pronounced my name wrong.

Here's the thing. I am unique and special because of who I inherently am. My character, my strenghts, me weeknesses, my personality, my interests...all of that makes me special, not how my name is spelled.

I know three Sophia's all under the age of 3.  It's WAY popular right now.  I'm pretty sure it's going to the be Jennifer of it's day.

This. If you really were set on it and loved it "so" much, you wouldn't be so focused on how popular it is or posting about it. I'd change it.

  • I was that way about Harper. I loved it five years ago with it was in the 490's on the SSA. Turns out, by the time I got pregnant....I had not one, but two friends using Harper and now it was like 54 or something on the SSA list. I nixed it off our list. Still love the name but don't regret not using it for my now almost 14mo old. I recently had another friend say they decided on their girls name.....Harper. The real kicker, all three Harper's that I know have the same middle name......that middle name is the SAME middle name we wanted to use! And it isn't even a popular middle name! There would have been four "Harper X's" running around.

  • I had a very Italian last name (before I was married) and my name is Amelia. Classic like Sofia but not super popular. Girl names are hard for me too.

  • I am a teacher and I usually don't have double names. Although this year I have Aime and Ami and Calah and Kayla. There isn't much you can do about it and if you want the name go with it. I was willing ot give up lily to have something else because it was too popular. However, if you don't want to give it up, don't!
