Food Allergy

New and questions

My pedi just switched my LO to alimentum at his 2 month appt today due to suspected milk protein allergy. Also she wanted to thicken feeds due to his reflux. First he is not eating much at all and just screamed when I tried to feed it to him last. Could this possibly be because he doesn't feel well from shots or he hates the taste? Also nipple size... We are at a level 1 playtex ventair so I went up to medium flow level 2 and it seems he's gasping/ choking on it but level 1 with the thickened feeds he is not getting anything out of it. Thoughts? Experiences?
My main question though is when can they actually test for allergies on infants? I want to try to be sure he actually does have an issue as well. Thanks and sorry I am a worried ftm

Re: New and questions

  • DD was tested at 4 months - scratch test. So yes they can check infants for allergies.  DD is also on alimentum by the way.  Some babies can not even tolerate alimentum and need something broken down even further (like Elecare or Neocate) -- but by the way.

I can not comment on the nipple size -- we used size 1 for so long.. only changed to size 2 a couple of months ago.  I would say try holding him more upright so he could have more control. When nursing DD & DS i had such a fast let down that they were chocking and gagging during nursing sessions.  I used to have to lean back so that they could have more control over the flow -- i think the same rules apply... meaning get him more upright so he could have more control of the flow as he drinks.

Good luck... i'm so sorry cause i know all this is just so hard.
