Re: OMG it's Wednesday!!!

  • Grant rolled over 2xs during OT today! Our OT said she wouldn't say he is rolling, but that it is an emerging skill. I hope it sticks this time because he's teased me before. ..

  • DD1 loves bird right now. LOVES. She answers people with "cheep cheep" and calls herself a Sophie-bird and gave herself a scraped face at preschool recently because she was trying to "fly" off the swings. Eeek!

She cracked me up tonight because she "hatched" out of her towel after her bath. Also, I've heard her on the potty saying to herself, "Oooop! Some eggs!" LOLOLOL.

The other day I asked her what she wanted for her birthday, and made a few suggestions, and she told me, "I want a toy bird." Which is pretty awesome because it's something she came up with on her own; I'm pretty sure she's never seen a toy bird (other than plush, which is not what she asked for), so she's asking for something that she's not even quite sure exists. Thank God she didn't ask for a real one, because I would've had a really hard time saying no!

She and DD2 were just filling the house up with little-girl giggles tonight, chasing each other and saying things to make each other laugh. I loved it.

ETA: Oh, this week, one of the times when Elsa was upset, Sophie asked her, "Elsa, why are you crying?" Which, one of the new goals for her IEP is assessing peers' emotional state and responding appropriately. And after DD2 had stopped, DD1 told her, "Elsa, I'm glad you're calm now." Yay!

  • DD is a biter - especially at daycare. Her teacher said that on Monday this particular boy (her main "bite" of choice due to various things) had her cornered and she was sure DD was going to bite him. But she didn't! I do not know the ins and outs - but I took it as at least a successful attempt at not reacting with violence towards others.

DS finished his first semester. He's successfully completed 15 credits. I haven't seen the grades yet and am hoping there won't be any surprises.
DS and I went Christmas shopping last night and had a really pleasant time. At our last stop, The Beer Store, an elderly lady came up and asked him if he could help "a little old lady" step off the curb. He said "sure" and let him lean on her out to her car. As they crossed I could hear them laughing. She had thanked him and he told her "I'm an Eagle Scout and I know we're supposed to help little old ladies cross the street but this is the first time anyone ever asked me to. If I'd known I would have worn my Class A."
    This is great! Love it!
  • I am really late to the game, but I have a few.

We went out to eat Wednesday night and ran into DS' preK teacher. She came to say hello and he squeaked out a "hi" and then smiled and hid his head in my lap. When she asked him about it the next day, he hid his head in his hands, smiling. We are excited that he didn't have a melt down over the fact that his schema for his favorite restaurant was wrecked, haha.

In the last two weeks, DS has begun to follow directions like a champ. One, sometimes two steps, with decreasing need for cues and repetition. It's SO awesome to be able to say, "stay with Mommy," or "sit on chair," or "get your coat and shoes," and see him follow the direction. He has made things so much easier by working on this skill it's so liberating to be able to take him to the store or restaurant without having anxiety about chasing him through the store or pissing people off.

My last one is for one of my work kiddos. I work in a classroom for toddlers with autism and I feel like they're my own kids probably because it feels like I'm hanging out with a group of 2yearold DS's!. This particular guy just started with us and I have only heard him say 2 words total aside from some screeching and grunting. He spent about 5 minutes !!! on Tuesday morning holding cutouts of animals up to my face and watching my mouth to see me say the words. When I didn't say anything, he looked in my eyes and waited for me!!!!!!!!. Then he imitated some of the words and animal sounds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. It gave me tears. I had to call his mom to tell her about it. I hope that their Christmas break is full of great things just like that!
  • Sorry about the weird punctuation. Somehow all of my parentheses are gone.
