Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I am really not ready....

Our LO is starting to show major signs of potty training but I just dont feel ready. Yesterday she came to me, grabbed her diaper, said pee pee and ran to the bathroom door amongst other hints. Dont get me wrong I love the idea of no diapers, etc but im not ready for the constant mom i have to go to the bathroom, getting everyone else to not use diapers, etc... We are having another baby in april so I was planning on taking a week off at the end of Feb to start the training without dealing with babysitters or daddy only being here. Right now I have random days off here and there. Guess its time to start but.... deep breath we can do this. I do have four days off at xmas. Anyone else having mixed feelings on starting?

  • Well something to keep in mind is that many LOs experience a regression when brothers and sisters show up. This is perfectly normal but my interfere with your schedule. I'd either start now or wsit til summer.

  • DD1 was just under 2.5 when we started. I work full time so we started slow.  When we were home she wore undies and we went every 20 minutes and worked up to her telling me she had to go over many weeks.  I didn't send her to daycare in undies for about a month.  My DCP was really good about training, but DH and MIL were lax and frustrating.  She picked up on the whole process pretty quickly, is day and night trained and hasn't had an accident since early November.  She did regress for about 2 weeks about 2 months after I thought she was 100% trained.

If it were me, I would hold off and see how she adjusts to your new LO and maybe start at the end of your maternity leave when you all have adjusted to the new routine.  It also helps when they are a little older and more verbal and understanding.  Good luck!

  • IMO, it's a process and you can start simple with switching to pullups instead of going full on if you don't consider yourself ready.  Go for what you can now though..  Getting the idea planted and reinforcing the potty action is a great place to start.  We didn't switch over to thick undies and rubber pants until she'd been dry for a week in a row...  Then she was in those a couple months then eventually when she was done at night we moved to the panties...

  • I never felt pressured to rush it or to start training. We took it very slow and followed his cues and it worked much better for us. Sounds like you can do the same thing since she is showing signs. No need to rush into full on training, just follow her cues and ease into it. It's much less scary or stressful when you do it that way.
  • For the past couple of weeks, my DD has been telling me when she has to poop before she actually poops.  However, she only does that at home.  If she is with others, she doesn't tell them.  I am going to start slow...

  • My son is 22 months and has been potty trained, minus overnight, for about 1 month. He started to show interest in the potty and would tell me when he was wet so we just decided to try and it was a success. I say you try and see what happens. Worst case is that she truly isn't interested and you can just wait a little longer. Good luck.
