I need you brilliant ladies to help me come up with a slogan for a picket sign for Lily to wear tomorrow. The elementary teachers here are doing one day rotating strikes and it's our board's turn tomorrow. I want to come up with something that addresses the issue from a baby/child's perspective.
The main point of the strike is about democracy (although the government and the media keep trying to pretend it's about money). To quickly sum up, we're protesting the fact that the government passed legislation that takes away our democratic right to collective bargaining. The legislation includes clauses that say that the government can force an agreement on the teachers that cannot be reviewed/questioned in court. It also says "the Ontario Labour Relations Board shall not inquire or make any decision on whether this...is constitutionally valid or is in conflict with the Human Rights Code."

Re: Need a Slogan
Does that make sense?
Yup! I like it.
All I've been able to come up with is something along the lines of "I was born into a democracy. What happened?"

Isn't it just? It's not exactly a good sign for the legality of what they're doing when they have to include clauses like that. It's frickin' scary. And the education minister lies through her teeth every chance she gets and says that they HAVE to do this to protect the kids from us horrible teachers. The legislation is actually called the "Putting Students First Act" - what a joke! There are a lot of protest signs about how you can't put students first by putting teachers last.
