Babies: 6 - 9 Months

too young for talking?

I have no clue when to expect LO to start talking but a month or so LO has been making a "heyyyyyyyyyyyy" sound and waving, yesterday she started "da-da-da-da"ing everything. She says it to Daddy, she says it to the chair. I can't tell if she is babbling or if she's actually talking. Anyone?

  • It is most likely babbling, but it sounds like words because babies mimic what we say.

  • Babbling.  It wasn't until recently (the last few weeks) that DD has said any "real words".  She will say daddy, mama, doggy and thank you.  Sometimes I think she's saying hi, but I'm not sure.  She also says du (duck).  The difference is she says these things in context (looking at dog or duck, says thank you when you hand her something).  She will look at her dad and say "daddy" followed by a string of babble like she's telling him a story.

  • I had read somewhere that its easier for them to say the sound da or ba. I'll sit my lo in front of me and repeat sounds over and over. She just looks at me... Smiles big, blows a raspberry... Then she sort of gets it and we get all excited and cheer!

When I say gets it, it sounds like thaa.
