Hives? From a cold?

Ok, so DD has started with mild hives this week.  We went to the Dr on Monday and he diagnosed them as such.  We went through detergent, food, and usual allergy suspects.  Nothing has changed that I'm aware of...unless a kid at daycare changed detergents and she's reacting to that, but she's never been that sensitive.

So meanwhile she's on benadryl for a few days, but hives keep popping up every now and again since Monday. I was on Dr Google (I know I know) and it said something about Hives can happen during a common cold.  Interesting....especially since DD is currently a snot machine.  Anyone else hear this or experience anything like this?

Re: Hives? From a cold?

  • The same thing just happened to my daughter last week. They were gone after a few days. She had a cold as well.

  • Interesting.  Thanks for the insight.  Maybe it is just related to the cold.  Poor girl, she seems so unhappy whenever they come out.  Thankfully they seem to fade rather quickly.

  • A gets hives or some sort of random rash during about 50% of his illnesses. Since they almost always pop up during a fever, I usually rush him to the pedi but they always diagnose a viral rash.

  • Yes!  DS got sent home with bad hives one week at school.  We thought it was a reaction, but the next day he had a fever.  The doctor said it was probably the onset of the fever.  It's happened two more times since then... hives, fever the next day.

  • Yup. DD had hives for the first time a couple months ago as diagnosed by pedi, and it was just from the cold she had. It only happened that once and she has had several colds, so I guess it was just how that virus affected her.
