I grew up with a father from Puerto Rico, who is a 3rd degree blackbelt and insisted that we kept a way to defend ourselves, not a gun, in the car. We all took karate growing up and my parents have a karate studio in their house where we could train.
Because of this, I have always kept mace and a baseball bat in my car. DH has the same in his as well as a swiss army knife that he often carries.
Does pepper spray or tear gas count? I carry those when I'm out running or walking outdoors. I used to carry one on my everyday key chain, but I got sick of taking it off to go to Disney World and the airport, so I left it off.
I live in a city with a relatively high rate of violent crime, and I regularly jog outdoors in the dark, so I don't think it's excessive to carry something on my keychain.
ETA: Looking at other responses, I think maybe people were only talking about guns. I do not own or use a gun.
Technically no, however, my car is full of office supplies and a pen can do serious damage!
When it isn't cold as crap out, I like to jog in the evening, I really should look into mace or something. I only run with a friend or my dog (95 lb German Shepherd) so I usually feel pretty safe but I should have back up. My dog is sweet and has lost battles with house flies but will put up a fight for me, DH or DD.

I have pepper spray on me basically at all times (it's on a keychain). I am not a scared person, though. I take sensible precautions and assume the people around me are good people, too. I don't need a gun.
Nope. I don't even have keys for the key-stab self defense thing anymore, and lobbing a $400 key fob at an assailant is unlikely to be effective or smart.
Nothing makes me freak out more, though, than the thought of all the regular old idiots around me who may have a concealed gun "for their protection". FVCKME. It's scarier than the thought of any potential criminal attack.

Glad my husband and I are regular old idiots.
You're glad? Okay.
I think it's ridiculous to call anyone who carries a gun a regular old idiot.
I have a pepper spray velcroed right by my steering wheel, I have my concealed carry and have a small gun in my purse, in the zipper pouch. Dh has a concealed carry and has is gun on him anytime we are out.

She said the idiots with guns scare her, not that everyone with a gun is an idiot.
I have a cc permit, so technically I can have a gun in my purse. I don't, though. I have a gun in a biometric safe in my car. Only I can get it (my thumbprint opens it). I mostly rely on pepper spray and some self defense tactics I learned from a course a few years ago. I also use common sense. If something doesn't feel right, I get myself out of that situation quickly.
I think it's also worth reminding everyone that we all live in different communities with different crime rates and public safety and we all have different lifestyles and risk factors. What seems like overkill in one community may be appropriate in another, KWIM?
It's illegal in Canada to have a loaded weapon in your car.
You are allowed to transport your weapon to and from a gun range or hunting camp if it is not loaded, with a lock on the gun, in a locked gun safe, with the ammunition locked in a different safe and the two are stored separately.
No. I don't even own any real weapons. I have a snow brush in my car. Does that count?
Related: I was talking to a coworker who manages situations of students who show concerning behaviour and may pose a threat to themselves or others and she was recently at a conference in Florida and she said they had a roundtable discussion about how threats escalate easily because of the ability to carry arms (ETA: I guess it started out by talking about why they don't just ban firearms on campuses). She had a hard time fathoming because in Canada we can't carry weapons. She said imagine how different my job would be trying to difuse a situation with someone who had a gun on their hip.

ya gonna have to buy tickets to the gun show to see my weapons...
But DH (and just about every guy we know/are friends with) have some sort of weapon, either a large heavy flash light/pocket knife/mini baseball bat... within reach while sitting in drivers seat.

Well, technically, anything can be used as a weapon - keys, nails, teeth, knees, fists, finger jabs to the eyeballs...
I assume you mean handgun, oc spray, etc. though. No, I don't carry but DH is an LEO and carries an off duty concealed handgun.
Glad my husband and I are regular old idiots.
I know I already used this, but I love it.

I have scissors, come in useful for various purposes. Also aerosol hairspray--which can be effective if used like pepper spray.
