Black Widow spider, help!

We just got our xmas tree yesterday and this morning DH found a black widow crawling away from it! Eeeeek! I asked him if he was positive it was a black widow and he said yes he saw the red hour glass on it.

Could the spider have come from the tree or is it a fluke he saw it coming from that area? DH wanted to get rid of the tree but that's 60 down the drain!

I am calling the extermintator when they open up...just wondering what you girls would do in regards to the tree.

Re: Black Widow spider, help!

  • My cousin is an exterminator and he can tell you where the bugs etc come from so wait and see what the exterminator says. It's a good thing your DH saw it!

  • I know nothing about black widow spiders but I just wanted to say sorry you're dealing with this!

In terms of the tree, I'd probably get rid of it because I would be freaked out that maybe there's more in there.

  • The exterminator was able to come same day! He fully inspected the tree and didn't see any black widow sacks but just in case he sprayed the whole tree. He said the chemicals won't harm it or our baby...only the bugs hehe

We wanted to hire a company anyway so he went ahead and did the whole house inside and out.

He said the spider probably crawled onto the tree while it was sitting in the lot waiting to be sold....just bad luck on my part!
  • I would use an artificial tree from now on regardless. Better for the environment, little to no maintenance, and definitely no spiders!
