Train horns

I'm a FTM and we recently moved to a house that unknowingly to us is two blocks from the train tracks. You can hear it pretty loud and clear in the bedroom and it wakes me up at least once a night. I'm worried about how a newborn is going to handle that. Anybody with experience?

Re: Train horns

  • They adjust really quickly. The air here is really dry so we can almost always hear trains four miles away. My ILs' house is about half a mile from the train tracks and it's never bothered the baby even though it keeps me up.

I recommend the Marpac 980A for both you and the baby though. I swear we've all slept better since we bought ours. Blocks out trains, barking dogs, noisy AC units, the sound of the washer and dryer running, and helps mask snoring and tossing and turning.

  • We used to live at at metro station and didn't have a problem when my infant niece came to stay. If you can, though, replacing windows (at least in bedrooms first) with better quality might help a lot!

  • I grew up by train Tracks .... You don't even hear it after a short while. When I moved away I couldn't sleep because it was too quiet :).

  • YES!  We just moved but had lived right next to a train crossing for commuter/freight trains.  Every time the train came it had to honk it's horn and the gate went down with *ding ding ding....*.  It's amazing how quickly you adjust & the baby won't even notice since it doesn't know anything different!

  • The baby won't know any differently (whereas, you do since you just moved there).  DH is from another state, and when we go home to visit his parents, the sound of the train keeps me up at night.   He says it's soothing to him though, and he actually likes it.   Since he grew up with it, it doesn't bother him...

  • I have a we have train fairly close 2 years later and the horn wakes me almost every night at 4am. It's never seemed to wake DS1.
We got him a sound machine when DS2 was born. One of the sounds is actually a train. Everynight he points to the machine and says "choo choo" he gets upset if I put it on a different track so he falls asleep to the train everynight.
